22oz bomber pours mahogany with tan head. The aroma offers up some notes of grapefruit combining with a bit of pine hops and dark roasted maltiness. The taste is very similar as its fairly thin body ushers in moderately strong notes of grapefruit like hops, some pine hop resinious and then a bit of dark roasted maltiness. It seems to stay that way into the finish and leaves me wanting a bit more depth. This beer’s aroma and taste hits these three notes (pine, grapefruit and dark roastiness) about midway without creating and boundary pushing elements (that I enjoy).

UPDATED: MAY 5, 2012 On tap in sleeve at Hops in New Westminster. Almost black in color. Little head. Slightly aromatic. A very nice black IPA. Quite hoppy with a malty molasses backnote.

Tap at Hoppy Monk El Paso, TX April 2012-Pours deep amber like the back of a les paul guitar with a fluffy kacki large bubble head. nose is lite roast, poine and lite touch of earth. Some dirty floral notes come through as well, especially as the beer warmed a bit. flavors exhibit the dank piney metallic hops combined with the roasted malt, which masks a fairly present note of diacytl (however it was still under my threshold of bad). copper-ish hop flavors long bitter slightly sweet metallic finish. Its not a bad beer, needs a little refining (like most all Rogue beer) and a better yeast strain then it would be rockin!

650ml bottle. Clear dark brown with nice frothy lacing off-white to beige head. Wonderful floral hop aroma, cautious dark malt background, a touch of roast. Dry, minimally roasty taste, relatively smooth palate, though well carbonated. Bitter hop increases to the end. Well balanced, though not completely integrated hop and malt sides.

Rund, gut. 9/11/10/10/10/10

650ml bottle from Bierkompass

Pours dark brown, almost black, with a medium foamy head. Aroma of roasted malts, earthy notes and hops. Taste is quite bready with some roasted malts, earthy notes and harsh raw bitterness. Hints of cold coffee and chocolate. Finish is roasty with some earthy notes. Overall a bit unbalanced black IPA/brown ale with just a bit of harsh bitterness and no fruitiness. Earthy notes don’t fit in quite well.

Geruch getreidig, zitrushopfig und würzig. Antrunk süßlich mit leicht säuerlicher Note. Alsbald malzröstig, moderat zitrushopfig. Abgangs malzröstig, eher mäßig bitter und etwas dünn wirkend. Leicht alkoholisch nachwärmend. Ok.

Bottle at home. Pours dark brown with a nice nutty head. Aroma is both hoppy and malty with a slight oxidized note aswell. Taste is a bit odd, malty and hoppy. It falls between chairs in my book. It is neither a hoppy brown ale nor a "normal" malty BA. That beeing said, it is a very nice brew.

650 ml bottle.
Pours a dark brown colour with a beigeish head. Aroma of sweet fruits with some roastiness. Flavour of roasted malts, bread, weak hops and some fruitiness. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel and a weak, fruity and malty finish. Surprisingly low bitterness. Not really a black IPA, more of an American Strong Ale.

A colabrown beer with a big and beige head. Aroma is fruitfull, roastiness, some tropical fruits and liquirice. Taste is balanced, roasted malts, even some ryebread, wooden hoppyness and nice sweetness. Medium bodied, quite smooth to drink. Quite nice beer, but the final freshness and unique interest is missing.
