3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at Moriartys. Clear reddish brown pour. Off-white head. Very bitter malty brew. Burnt orange peels. Cherry stones. Green peppercorns. Chocolate nibs. Varnish. Big bite for such a relatively low ABV. Did not like it at first but its growing on me.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark brown with red tint and off white head. Aroma is pine and citrus. Taste follows nose with emphasis on bitter grapefruit. Good beer. Not sure what I would lable it, but did not seem like a black ipa to me.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
This black IPA has its hops assertive, but not too much. Tastes like a grapefruit was squeezed into it, but with just the right amount. Very good and delicious. Last one at my beer store, hope to find it again some time.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
The beer poured decently with a dark brown/reddish hue that passes almost no light through it, has a mild amount of head and has very little lacing on the glass. The beer smells decent with a good blend of caramel malts, mild hoppy notes, and a chocolate /coffee smell. The beer tastes decent with a great blend of chocolate/coffee/caramel malts and a mildly hoppy finish. The mouthfeel is average as the beer is moderately carbonated, full bodied, and leaves you somewhat dry. Overall, a slightly above average strong ale with good blended taste but somewhat flat.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours out brown with a solid tan head that has staying power. Massive lacing down the whole glass.
Smells of coffee and some piney hops.
Tastes about like it smells. Enough hop presence to let you know its there, but a very well balanced beer. Solid but not exceptional.
Mouthfeel is pretty average. For a winter warmer, I’d like it to be a bit thicker than it is.
I’ve had better and worse both from Rogue and from this style. I was hoping the deliciousness of Amarillo would shine through a bit more than it did, but still a solid brew.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle sample at the tasting. Thanks Tom L. Pours dark reddish brown with a tan head. Roasted malts aroma with some faint hops in the background. Sweet with caramel and roasty notes, dry hoppy bitter finish. Medium-bodied. The beer is not in its best, feels stale, will be happy to try it again.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle sample at a tasting at Dror S.’s place. Thanks Tom L. Dark brown with a big beige head. Aroma of stale hops, a bit piney, with roastiness and a bit of chocolate. Roasty flavor, a bit sweetish, with hints of chocolate and coffee and a hoppy bitterness, kinda stale. Medium-bodied. Not fresh enough.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Growler - pours brownish red with lots of beige head and faint lacing. Nose is pine, resin, caramel, and grapefruit. Flavor adds a slight metallic element. Quite bitter and a bit sweet. Long bitter finish. Medium body. A great value and full of flavor. I wish I could a keg of this. However, the neophyte in me wonders why this is a black ipa and not an imperial amber.

2.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
6/23/2010: Rogue Mogul Madness... Aroma: Pine, citrus, and earthy hops; toffee; similar to that of a Pacific Northwestern Style Red IPA... Appearance: Deep brown color with a thick beige-colored head of foam. Flavor: Bittersweet toffee maltiness (seems a bit scorched though) followed by peppery, earthy, floral, and resinous bitterness; fairly high bitterness level, but nothing seems to blend or work together; tastes more like an experimental homebrew; weird spiced characteristic; needs more hop flavor to balance the raw bitterness. Palate: Average. Overall: I knew I should have just avoided this beer. I specifically ignored it for my first pint, but then decided to get one anyway for my second pint... Stange brew; seems to be more malt than hops or bitterness; seems scorched; messy, distracted combination of flavors; not recommended...
Draught at The Comet in Northside (Cincinnati, Ohio). Rating #351 for this beer.
