Have Rogue gone and invented a Red IPA? This sure wasn’t Black. Drinkable enough, but not particularly interesting.

From a bomber. Smells delicious, like plums and caramel. Slightly sweet, slightly bitter. Light foamy head.

Bottle. Pours hazy dark amber with thick frothy beige head; decent retention and lacing. Aroma is cookie, cereal, and caramel malts, figs, dates, sweetbread, red grapes, and floral hops. Flavor is sweet malts and dark fruit esters that are quickly followed and dominated by floral and earthy hops (heavy bitterness); dry finish with a lot of lingering grapefruit and coffee bitterness. Medium body and low carbonation.

Pours a dark caramel color with a light foamy head. Aroma is sweet with a little bit of hoppiness to it. Flavor is definitely more sweet and caramel-malty than I expected. Very nicely balanced. Good stuff.

Pours with a thick, heavy head. Very dark amber/brown in colour. Smells strongly of coffee, cocoa, and malt. Very smooth going down, and very full bodied. Malty and slightly bitter finish. A very tasty beer, and I hope to track down more of it in the winter! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

No heavy spices with a typical winter beer. Medium hops, and a little more than a bit malty which I like. Gorgeous dark/red color, no head which is off white and minimal lacing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap @ Bent Elbow - a dark, almost black ale with a 2 finger cap. Very hoppy and roasty nose to this. Moderate carbonation. Rich chew of roasty malts in front is instantly balanced with PacNW hopping, some cocoa, long roasty bittering finish. Quite a decent Cascadian dark. I think Flying monkeys netherworld is a tastier Cascadian but this ale is more satisfying. Sturdier and more robust. Nice drinkng.

Hops galore! Kind of a 1 trick pony. Pour is very dark w/ a tan head & leaves some lacing. Huge bitterness upfront that lingers throughout the finish. Somewhat disappointing - I was hoping for some more depth!

Pours a brownish amber (not black that’s for sure) with a medium creamy bubbly light tan head that laced. Aroma of fresh citrusy and pine hops, caramel and honey roasted nuts. Flavor of toffee, caramel, tobacco, pine and citrusy hop notes. A solid dose of malt flavors going on here with the aggressive American hops to balance. They didnt hit the black in the appearance on this one and are getting too much of the malt flavor. More like a hoppy amber. Great beer but not a black IPA.
