3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at D.B.A. New Orleans. Pours a dark caramel color with a foamy head. Aroma is sweet with good hoppiness to it. Flavor is definitely more sweet and caramel-malty than I expected. Very nicely balanced. Good stuff. (they had written in next to the name on the chalk board, strong ale. As soon as tasted new it was a Black IPA)

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Solid Black IPA. A little light in body, but clear happy flavor. Could use slightly more flavor for palate feel. Nice finish. Good with spicy food.

"very interesting. rich and full bodied. has an herbal aspect...can’t tell if it’s the hops or yeast. low bitterness and flavorful. sweet, bready and thick, but the tripel aspects come through a little more than the bock. nice unique brew."

Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance- Served a deep orange-amber colored brew with a tiny off white head. While tiny the head was quite persistent slowly fading to leave a small amount of lacing.
Smell – Not the standard winter warmer aroma as it is not too sweet, but instead bready and hoppy. It is heaviest of a toasted bread and biscuit aroma with a strong showing of citrus and pine hop smells. Unexpected but quite pleasant.
Taste – The taste begins with a smooth bready taste with some lightly roasted malt flavors. Mixed with these are a light citrus flavor of both a sweet (tangerine) and hoppy bitter (grapefruit) citrus. As the taste advances the sweeter citrus fades and the bitter gets stronger. Soon some resinous pine hop flavors start entering the taste. They start out more mild but get more intense as the taste advances. In the end the little bit of sweet caramel comes to the flavor profile and mixes with the bready and now rather strong pine and citrus hop to leave a lingering bitter flavor on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the creamier side with a carbonation level that was just below average. The creamier body and lower carbonation really allowed all the bready and hop flavors to linger on the tongue and allowed them to shine through, while the lower carbonation matched well the lower sweetness of the beer.
Overall – An unexpectedly hoppy winter warmer. While unexpected, it was rather nice; not too sweet but rather balanced overall. It’s a beer to try if you get a chance.
