Bottled. A deep red beer with a lazing brown head. The aroma has strong notes of hops lending it notes of spices and lemons. The flavor is sweet with notes of chewy malt, caramel, spices, and citrusy hops.

Bottle 65 cl. Pours an opaque dark brown with a handsome, dense beige head. A little citrus in the nose, some herbs and licorice. Medium-bodied, light coffee notes, sweet licorice and again light citrusy hops and a dry lightly malt bitter finish. Not the most refined Black IPA. 311211

Chelmsford Beer Festival. Keg from Podge’s bar. Almost clear dark red beer. Good size pale tan head. Palate is light and a little dry. Good fine carbonation. Nice piney hops with a light spice. Very light citrus. Underpinned by lactose sweet caramel malt. Finishes minerally.

Red-brown color, hazy, with a huge head, creamy. The aroma has some sweet caramel and resiny/citrusy hops. Good body strength, solid dark caramel flavor, chewy, with some residual sugars; powerful hopping, very resiny; very strong final, long, with focus on roasted nuts. An obvious beer, but also another good hit from Rogue.

Bomber bottle from Utobeer, drunk at home. Now I’m not a fan of a lot of black IPAs as they are too much of everything and lack balance. Rogue I like for their big uncompromising style. So will I like a big black ipa from Rogue? Deep red ruby colour with a thick lasting beige head. I love these size of bottles. Really lovely to hold and pour and I’ve always liked the artwork. Typical big sweet hoppy Rogue aroma. Not as roasty as some of the black ipas. Certainly some roast. Quite a dry beer actually. Good hoppy dark ale where the malts are the most dominant feature I think. Good milk chocolate flavour. Decent lasting bitterness. Still that odd 2 row malt aroma of empty toffee that I’m not keen on. I like the fact that they haven’t tried to do too much on this, not thrown the kitchen sink at it. Yes, a tasty beer.
