Commercial Description:
Five layers of malt create a complex, slightly sweet flavor balanced by five different hop varieties. The addition of free-range coastal waters and Rogue's proprietary PacMan Yeast make this 12-ingredient elixir something Friar Tuck would enjoy! We hope you do too! Monk Madness Ale is brewed with 2-row Pale, Belgian Munich, Belgian Special B, Weyermann Melonoidin, and Amber Malts; Belgian Nobles, Chinook, Amarillo, Centennial, and Summit Hops; measuring in at Plato 18 degrees, ABV 7.4 percent, 68 IBUs, 78 degrees Apparent Attenuation, and 36 Degrees Lovibond. (Editor's Note: these stats are from the bottle, not the website, which differs substantially) A versatile and robust ale, we recommend pairing this with spicy foods, strong cheeses, and/or with dessert.

Pours a dark amber with a quickly thinning offwhite to cream head. The nose is confusing. Malty, with an almost chocolate point to it, this reminds me somewhat of Lagunita’s Hairy Eyeball or a less hopped up AB. Alcohol comes through a bit more than I’d expect with this ABV. Some floral hops foe shizzy. The body on this is about average, though perhaps a bit overcarbonated to give it some more foaminess. This beer tastes out of place. A bit sweet, but on the dry side thanks to the hop profile and the toasty points. Creamy, with some almost bready grainy flavors, again, dark malts pop out. A bit of a fruity finish with a dry lingering toasty finish. Not a huge fan, I’m glad I got this bottle for free... In the end, this is a toasty unclean Dead Guy... goddamned pac man yeast!

Deep copper amber with a towering foamy almond head generating thick lace. Aromas of sweet English toffee and resinous fruity hops. Sweet, with flavours of same on palate, moderately bitter finish. Nothing really Belgian about this brew, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

22 oz. bottle from Holiday Wine in Escondido. Pours a gorgeous chestnut color - ruddy when held to light - with a huge and long-lasting beige head. Aroma is initially faint, but improved as it warmed, becoming fruity, with toffee and caramel, orange, a bit of brandy fruitcake and evergreen. Flavor also improved greatly as it warmed, Caramel and brown sugar, orange and grapefruit, florals and yeast, hints of spice, kind of like a belgian style west coast IPA. Medium to full body, smoothly gentle carbonation. I’m going to go against the grain on this one, because I really liked it. Satisfied my taste for rich malts and bold, over the top hops as well. Cheers Rogue.

Bottle rating. Dark red brown colored body with a fluffy marshmellow textured head. Rogue’s patented pacman yeast aroma with some cocoa notes. Somewhat metallic taste, followed by a dry and sour bitter finish. Interesting brew, but not one of Rogue’s best.

22oz bomber, poured a reddish-brown color, hazy, with a weak head that didnt last long. Slightly malty aroma with hops, dry alcohol, a bit of metallic smell I thought. Taste was mediocre, pretty bitter with some brown sugar and dry alcohol finish. A very simple brew, not all that well balanced. No linger on the palate, high carbonation.

Moderately hazy reddish-amber color. Thick, foamy, sticky off-white head. Very malty aroma with a bit of hops and some caramel fruitiness. The flavor is primarily malty, but also has significant citrusy hops which create a very sharp bitter finish. Pretty interesting but I wanted the hops to be a bit more in the background. A bit strange and unbalanced, but unique and pretty good.
