Commercial Description:
Five layers of malt create a complex, slightly sweet flavor balanced by five different hop varieties. The addition of free-range coastal waters and Rogue's proprietary PacMan Yeast make this 12-ingredient elixir something Friar Tuck would enjoy! We hope you do too! Monk Madness Ale is brewed with 2-row Pale, Belgian Munich, Belgian Special B, Weyermann Melonoidin, and Amber Malts; Belgian Nobles, Chinook, Amarillo, Centennial, and Summit Hops; measuring in at Plato 18 degrees, ABV 7.4 percent, 68 IBUs, 78 degrees Apparent Attenuation, and 36 Degrees Lovibond. (Editor's Note: these stats are from the bottle, not the website, which differs substantially) A versatile and robust ale, we recommend pairing this with spicy foods, strong cheeses, and/or with dessert.

Heavily malted and probably overly complex.... In my opinion, a beer with far too much stuff in it. Cloudy brown like a belgian but the taste was off. Very sweet with the malty palate... things were off and not just by a little bit. This is one of my least favorite Rogue beers, not worthy of the name.

This one has a nice piney hop nose, but as it warms up, more malts become discernible. It poured dark copper. The flavor on this one varied quite a bit. When it was colder, it was mostly piney and grapefruit hop bitterness, but as it warmed, some flavors of caramel malt and some sweet tea appeared. The tea flavor was especially noticable on the backend towards the end of the beer. This beer was extremely resiny, as dry hoppiness would coat the mouth and lips with each sip. For being so hoppy, I found this one rather palatable. This was probably my favorite Rogue Ale that I have ever had.

Big bottle. Half inch plus creamy cloudy head. Copper beer. Have a cold but pick up some malt, hops, cinnamon and nutmeg. Interesting spice flavour must be from the combination of hops. Malty body. Complex as expected from the ingredients. For some reason it doesn’t dazzle.

Aroma of pine and some weak tea scents as well. Dark reddish brown in appearance with a medium palate. Lots of tea flavor with a nice hop presence. Easy to drink and enjoyable.

Huge head. Sweet and hoppy, and somewhat complex. Enjoyable beer, but it didn’t blow me away.

Bottle. Ruby-mahogony beer with a beige head. Sweet malt and backing grapefruit/pine hop aroma. Flavor has a lot going on and the first couple sips show a bit of a muddled beer. Lots of malt - caramel, roast with hops (mostly grapefruit and pine). LIngering hops, malt and muddled beer. It needs to be simplified.

This American Strong Ale pours a medium to dark amber color from a 22oz bottle. Medium to large sized white foamy head. Aroma is caramel, grapefruity and piney. A medium bodied American Strong Ale. Malts are fruity, caramel and sweet. Hops are grapefruity, piney and a touch herbal. Not sure where the Monk comes into this beer, there is nothing remotely Belgian about this beer. It has the Rogue hop bomb feel for sure. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is bitter.

From the bomber, pours a dark amber - nice lookin beer. Big malty flavors and more hops than I had expected, grapefruit-bitterness grows as you drink this one. Respectably bitter with a toasty finish. I like this beer.
