Commercial Description:
Five layers of malt create a complex, slightly sweet flavor balanced by five different hop varieties. The addition of free-range coastal waters and Rogue's proprietary PacMan Yeast make this 12-ingredient elixir something Friar Tuck would enjoy! We hope you do too! Monk Madness Ale is brewed with 2-row Pale, Belgian Munich, Belgian Special B, Weyermann Melonoidin, and Amber Malts; Belgian Nobles, Chinook, Amarillo, Centennial, and Summit Hops; measuring in at Plato 18 degrees, ABV 7.4 percent, 68 IBUs, 78 degrees Apparent Attenuation, and 36 Degrees Lovibond. (Editor's Note: these stats are from the bottle, not the website, which differs substantially) A versatile and robust ale, we recommend pairing this with spicy foods, strong cheeses, and/or with dessert.

Clear coppery mahoganey. Tan creamy head. Aroma is wet malts with some sweet hops. Odd creamy bitterness covered brown malts in taste. I don’t know... I don’t want to describe it anymore; its hard to get into.

Bottle. Hazy brown body under a tan head. Brown sugar and crystal malt aroma - sweet. "Brown" flavor - crystal malt, oatmeal cookie, and tootsie roll in the finish. Bitter hops linger. Solid stuff but not interesting.

650ml brown bottle. Red/brown colour, bright red highlights. Good head retention, sticky tan foam. Aroma is sweet with a lot of caramel with light hop resins. Flavour is quite hoppy, light malt characte. Lingering bitterness, grapefruity aftertaste with trace dark malt and toffee.

22 oz bottle: pour is reddish brown with a light sand colored head. aroma is very sweet and malty. caramel and maple syrup. hops and fruity ester also present. very surprised by them amount of bitterness in this beer as i was expecting it to by a belgian style, not an american strong ale. bitter and roasted. thin and plain. not bad but not great. its just different. not one of rogues best offerings.

(Rating #946)

Clear copper body with a little beige head. Well malted and generously hopped. Basic moderately roasted and caramelized malts flavour. Hops make-up in quantity what they lack in expressiveness. Slight rotten fruits flavours but not really unpleasant. Rather ordinary and unadventurous American Strong Ale. Monks’ madness ain’t what it used to be, Rasputin would be bored to death.

This beer was better than what I thought it would be. I am a bit surprised of the low scores, but I am agree with everyone else. The reason being is not in the appearance. The appearance was a nice dark brown, a hint of ruby coloring. The flavor was somewhat roasted, with a sweet hint. Very interesting. This beer had a slight bitter aftertaste, but I was hoping the beer to be bit smoother. The beer was actually very thin. This beer does not drink like a meal. I love it when beer actuallyfills me up, this did not have that affect. I am noticing the malt flavor as the beer warms up. Still not my favorite, very surprised, as I have never tried an American Strong Ale as of yet.
