Commercial Description:
Five layers of malt create a complex, slightly sweet flavor balanced by five different hop varieties. The addition of free-range coastal waters and Rogue's proprietary PacMan Yeast make this 12-ingredient elixir something Friar Tuck would enjoy! We hope you do too! Monk Madness Ale is brewed with 2-row Pale, Belgian Munich, Belgian Special B, Weyermann Melonoidin, and Amber Malts; Belgian Nobles, Chinook, Amarillo, Centennial, and Summit Hops; measuring in at Plato 18 degrees, ABV 7.4 percent, 68 IBUs, 78 degrees Apparent Attenuation, and 36 Degrees Lovibond. (Editor's Note: these stats are from the bottle, not the website, which differs substantially) A versatile and robust ale, we recommend pairing this with spicy foods, strong cheeses, and/or with dessert.

Hazy, copper appearance with an average size head and decent lacing. Toasted malt aroma, slightly sweet, earthy; dig a little deeper for some spicy hops. Smooth, medium bodied, nicely carbonated mouthfeel. Taste up front is malty, a little doughy, some toffee, and a bit flowery. Hops kick in with some citrus and pine flavors. Lingering, dry, bitter finish.

Murky brown pour with a frothy tan head. Smells like a yeasty Belgian with hearty malt and some sourness. Expected a Belgian Ale with the name, and was surprised to be hit with a dumptruck of hops on the first taste. The hops eventually gave way to a smooth malt and yeast finish. I really don’t know what to make of this. Its like a IIPA with yeast.

Bomber. Poured a hazy dark amber with a tall, creamy tan head with some lasting and leaving thick lacing. The aroma was very subdued malts. The flavor is very hoppy but hard to define what it is. Malt background. This thing is just a big flavor mess. Light to medium body with a dry texture. Moderate bitterness throughout. I’ll have to skip next time.

Bottle: Black cherry in color, large foamy beige head, sticky lacing.   Pale malt nose, slightly roasty, somewhat greenish hop tinge.   Flavor is fairly hop oriented, with the malts taking the back seat.   The malts come across as being slightly roasted, with a faint cocoa aspect at the end.   This appears to be a weak Pale Ale with malts that are a bit darker than what you would normally use.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Boring finish, a little weak at the end.   I was thinking this would be somewhat Belgian like, but nope.   Not good, not bad, just very middle of the road.   Yawn...

Nice amber pour, good combo of bitterness and flavor, good ale, would probably spend my $$ on another Rouge ale though

Bottle. Nice deep color in the appearance. Simply smells great and meaty. Flavor was that of bitterness and smoothness. It is really a fantastic little brew. Overall I would recommend this one if you like dark brews. Will get this one again.

Deep burgundy, creamy head. Slightly bready aroma, with a whiff of bitterness? I’m not so sure this is a Belgian! A closer look at the ingredients, and I’m thinking American Strong. Yep, the taste confirms it. Bread and caramel malts with a bit of sweetness, vague, undefined citrus and slightly piney hops. Has that Rogue house flavor. Not bad, but not spectacular.
