porterhouse (1146), Alna, Maine, USA Mar 14, 2007 (22 oz. bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/massachusetts/westborough/julio’s-liquors/461.htm target=blank>Julio’s Liquors) Smells malty, tastes hoppy. Rather unpleasant to drink...Pours a hazy dark amber with about one finger of amberish biege head that recedes a bit but holds pretty tight. Aroma is mostly dominated by maltiness - rock candy and vanilla. Some piney hops in there as well. Mouthfeel is full but a bit pebbly, also a bit chewy. Big sheets of lacing inside of glass. Kind of nice-looking. Flavor is kind of strange - quite bitter. Bitterness actually coats the tongue. Pine. Barely any malt to be found. Some caramel and vanilla creeps in as it warms up. Has traits of a barleywine or big IPA but a very poor flavor profile if you ask me. Pine isn’t particularly sharp but beer just doesn’t have an overall good taste. Alcohol well-hidden. andyhite (290), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Mar 13, 2007 22oz bomber. mahogany hue, avg fluffy head. complex malt aroma; caramel and darker fruit mainly. hops also in the aroma, as well as black pepper. also, a pleasant candy apple is on the back end of the aroma. rather smooth tasting ale - it is well balanced, slightly bitter on the finish, but dark and smooth overall. enjoyable, but i’m not sure if the reported 7% is correct. it’s a slightly above average beer at an above avg price. Cliff (355), Avon Lake, Ohio, USA Mar 9, 2007 Bomber, as the previous reviews state, I don’t know where the hell the brewers at Rogue came up with the name, but it is some serious false advertising. It was a pretty good beer, very hoppy with a good malt backbone. Earthy with some caramel sweetness. I just really don’t get the name, maybe name it to sound like a Belgian Abbey ale just to "Make the Monk’s Mad". I don’t know, but it was a tasty beer. Bockyhorsey (2481), Mesa, Arizona, USA Mar 8, 2007 22oz bottle. Medium fruit aroma with some caramel malt. Amber body with off white head. Flavor has a good fruity somewhat dry bitterness and sweet syrup. Yeasty bread dry palate. good beer Jwasciuk (194), Lowell, Michigan, USA Mar 6, 2007 I would have rated this hight if it was what was advertised, was hoping for a belgian abby but found an IPA! Pours murky dark brown. Aroma is hoppy mainly, grapefruit. Flavor starts mainly bitter and a bit of carmel which is promptly covered by cascading grapefruit flavor. Medium to light bodied refreshing and clean, lively CO2. Still wondering why they choose this name. SDalkoholic (1186), Chula Vista, California, USA Mar 5, 2007 When purchasing this i was for sure Rogue was attempting a Belgian abbey ale of some sorts, but upon scent of the nose and flavor by taste buds i found no such attempt. Found out this is an American strong ale which is always a treat from Rogue. A mild and delicious aroma of malt along with a very noticeable floral hop scent. Color is a golden brown with patch of foam that dies out across the glass. The drink is a chewy flavor ranging from sweet to bitter with such ingredients such as herbal tea, citrus, hop, earth, dirt, and slight malt to be had. Definitetly different strong ale offering from Rogue compared to all their other strong ales. JPDIPSO (4862), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Mar 4, 2007 Draft. Dark brown copper color with a modest beige head. Simple aromas of caramel, toast and light citric hops. Dry caramel flavors, with a quite heavy yeast taste. Somehow this has an aged hops influence. A dry dubbel with strong ale tendencies that never seems to come together. jefcon (997), Arlington, Virginia, USA Mar 3, 2007 Thin dark brown with a creamy lingering head and lacing. Aromas of cherries, caramel, raisins, and green hops. Astringent finish is bitter, following a more floral hop bite. Chickory, grapefruit, grass, some alcohol, a real clash of flavors. Definitely carries the oily nature of the alcohol and hops on the long finish. Very different for the strong ale category. Tight carbonation.
