tytoanderso (1382), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA Feb 15, 2007 22 oz bomber. Pours dark brown with amber highlights. Very interesting nose; notes of fresh cut grass, citrus (orange rind) and garden herbs. Firm on the palate. Medium bodied malt gives way to a pleasant burst of citrusy hops. Finishes hoppy and dry. Ughsmash (3981), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Feb 11, 2007 Bomber. Poured a clear, deeper orange with a uniform, sort of dense cap of beige head. The nose initially found warm nutty notes and caramel akin to some sorta brown ale... then the hops kicked in with a hefty dose of pine resin. The flavor was more or less carried by a high level of pine hoppage... lightly toasted caramel malts and sticky fruits were in there, too. High bitterness and an OK feel on the palate. Decent.. but not much more. Padron4KM (400), Chandler, Arizona, USA Feb 11, 2007 22 oz bottle. No freshness date.
Translucent copper with a thin tan head.
Aroma is juicy citrusy hops, with a carmely malt back.
Flavor is mostly hoppy with some roasty carmelized malts, and some very well hidden dark fruits.
Nice beer just not what I was expecting from something called Monk Madness. kyzr (1119), Belgrade, Montana, USA Feb 10, 2007 Amber color with off-white head. Light pepper on the nose. Malt comes through up front with an hoppy, bitter oily tabcco finish. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA Feb 10, 2007 From a 22 oz. bomber bottle with a list of ingredients and short blurb on right side of bottle.
Poured a reddish, golden hued brown with a foamy off-white head that settled in a sudsy lacing, small amount of ringed, laced sticking.
Aromas of grapefruity with the rind, floral, resiny hops, a light backing of roasted malts and a distinctive fruitiness from the Pacman yeast.
Good carbonation and a crisp, dryish, hop slick, creamy smooth light-medium bodied mouthfeel.
A nice Northwest hoppy taste, citric rind, earthy leafiness, resiny, a slick and lingering soft bitterness on the tongue, a light caramel maltiness, a subtle fruitiness, the alcohol is well masked and is warming in the back of the throat, and a dryish hoppy, yeasty, light sweet malty finish.
An another unique ale from Rogue, easy quaffability, if you like Rogue beers, then this is a must try.
realale420 (399), west covina, California, USA Feb 10, 2007 22oz bottle poured a dark brown color with a nice tan head. Aroma was all malt, didn’t get much of any hops. Taste was kind of lifeless with sweet malt flavors and a super dry finish. Not a beer that I would have again. BitchesBrew (710), Berkeley, California, USA Feb 9, 2007 [bottle] Sharp citrus hop aroma, with a touch of malty sweetness. Pours a clear dark brown color. Flavors are a showcase of harsh resinous hops, with some bready, sweet malt behind it all. Not really what I expected with the monk and all, but I find it pretty drinkable. The only real plus- it’s not a relabled Dead Guy. DJC (238), USA Feb 9, 2007 Very deep amber body, with an awesome off-white head. Very nice lacing. Malts played a huge role in the aroma, but the hops were noticeable in the background. The initial flavor is a good balance of sweet malts and bitter hops, but the finish is mostly a citrusy bitterness. I believe I chose the perfect time of year to drink this beer -- winter.
