brian1985 (14), Pennsylvania, USA Feb 3, 2007 Serving Type: 22oz bottle into glass
Appearance: Pours a deep amber/red/brown with a nice looking 2 finger off-white head that sticks around for a while and leaves nice lacing around the edge of my glass.
Smell: A very nice blend of hops and malts. Not very strong, but overall, a very pleasant aroma.
Taste: Pine hops. They really overpower the 5 layers of malt, and the sweetness I was expecting from it. The hops are not very bitter, but they do have a nice little bite. Some spices try to break through at the end, also.
Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with a somewhat dry finish.
Drinkability: One 22oz is more than enough for me. Overall, I was a little disappointed with this one, I was expecting more malt sweetness, but all of the malts were overpowered by the piney hops. I don’t think I would buy this one again.
mds (2112), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Feb 3, 2007 Bottle. Pours a dark ruby-copper coloured body with a large frothy eggshell head, leaving sticky lace as it slowly recedes. Rich hop aroma with a significant alcohol component and grapefruit resiny hops. Some toasty caramel-type malts are also evident lingering in the background. Very sharp piney flavour and disproportionately bitter. Alcohol closes off with a little bit of toasted breadiness. The finish is long and juicy. One-dimensional and straightforward.
Purchased at Bello Vino in Ann Arbor during the month of December in 2006. bu11zeye (5430), Frisco, Texas, USA Feb 3, 2007 (Bottle) Pours a burgundy body woth a large beige head and good lacing. Aroma of citrus and caramel. Flavor of layered hops and malts with a bitter finish. mephisto (1144), Taiwan Feb 2, 2007 dark cloudy amber with beige head, it is hoppy as expected from an american strong ale. mreeves (257), Sammamish, Washington, USA Feb 1, 2007 I was a little surprised to be served this one in a pint glass at the Issaquah Rogue location given the name, and was even more perplexed when it didn’t really taste like a Belgian ale to me. Too hoppy for the style. Just kind of a weird, though somewhat tasty, rendition of a Belgian ale (of some sort). Brownish color, plenty of hops (too many), yeast is the standard Rogue yeast which fails to give it any Belgian-style flavor. Optigon (561), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Feb 1, 2007 Pours dark brown. Thick white head. Jesus, all I get are hops from how this smells. Very strong hop flavor. Tastes a lot like Cascade with a lot of hop-bitterness to the taste. Good mouth feel though. frankenkitty (1900), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Feb 1, 2007 Rating for ’Rogue Monk Madness’ (just thought I’d make that clear before Rogue changes its name.)
Ruby-hued amber with noticable viscosity and a holding, creamy, sand-colored head. Belgian nobles are overpowered by PNWs in the aroma with additional dishwater notes and hints of coffee & cherries. Suddenly then naught, the flavor is as fleeting as a quick wave of Galaga, with a crapload of citric-rind hops strangely dissipated by a harsh astringence. Ya know, other than the fact that this may look like a dubbel, there’s really nothing Belgian about it... and I think that’s what we all expected here.

zootfinster (179), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 31, 2007 Pours a slightly hazy amber. Aroma is somewhat florally. Flavor show signs of malt as well as a floral hoppyness. Head begins nice but goes away too quickly.
This is a refreshing easy to drink beer
