brentfeesh (1030), Gadsden, Alabama, USA Jan 10, 2007 Thanks to my brother who shared his 22 oz bottle during the Buckeye’s horrible defeat. Pours clear mahogany color with a big frothy head. Lightly sweet malt aroma with light spiced candy hints. Light malt with only hints of sweetness during each sip. The hops are way more prominent than I expected. Very Spicy. Dry finish with a medium body. Drinkable. BückDich (4793), McCall, Idaho, USA Jan 9, 2007 Bottle: Dark auburn color, nice head and no lacing. The nose is a bit spicy with light grassy yeast and hop along with a bit of caramel and sweet plum and chewy dark rye and cherry. The flavor is a bit off, too clean and light. Neither Monk nor Madness. Finishes creamy and a bit malty with light bitterness. Eh. Thanks to Indiana Red. Immy (1912), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Jan 8, 2007 Bomber. Dark, hazy orange-brown with a beige head. Disregard the label alluding toward a Belgian style. This is ASA all the way. Earthy hops mix with citrusy brethren, some caramel hidden away in the nose. Big grapefruit flavors, some piney resin and an earthiness stomp all over a light sweet malt flavor. Not a total hop bomb, but far from balanced. Like most Rogues, it’s very good but not great and priced very attractively. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 7, 2007 Rusty body with a modest beige head. Aroma has sweet Munich malt signatures with notes of caramel, doughnuts, toast and cherries, plus mild crusty hops. Lots of caramelized qualities in the flavor plus substantial bitterness. Palate gives a pseudo-dry impression with coarse dextrins. I don’t get this, nor do I really care for it.
GeneralGao (3051), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Jan 7, 2007 22 oz bottle purchased at John’s Grocery in Iowa City, IA. Clear copper color with off white head that laced the glass. Attractive aroma of biscuity malt, caramel, toffee, and light flowery hops. Tatsed similar, but the hop flavor was more equally balanced with the malt relative to the aroma. Nice hop bitterness throughout, especially at the end, which is tempered by a delicate sweetness in the middle. Very good. Can’t wait to try it on tap some day. wheninhell (485), louisville, Kentucky, USA Jan 5, 2007 on tap at richos. amber with a tan head. hoppy aroma with light fruity malt undertones. sweet toasty malt with loads o hops. bitter hoppy finish. medium body. nice and hoppy but not much else. dwyerpg (2519), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Jan 3, 2007 Christmas spices in the aroma, almost dubbelish. A rich spicy beer from start to finish, it has nice, almost Scottish-like graininess to it. I like it a lot. Cornfield (4892), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Jan 3, 2007 I like the look of the beer, a deep (but not dark) red-orange-brown with a crusty beige head that "laces" in big chunks. The aroma is big and malty with grapefruit and cherries. The flavor is carried by the caramel and touch of toffee, a sweet pink grapefruit flavor coming in midpoint. The hops arrive near the finish and, hophead that I am, I was hoping for a surge of bitterness. It never really arrived, just presented itself as a balance to the sweetness. Okay.
Note: I saw this in shops a few times before I bought it. I had to remember to check the site to make sure that it wasn’t an aliased Rogue that I’d already had and didn’t particularly care for. Their continual renaming can have an adverse effect on their sales that way.
