Commercial Description:
Five layers of malt create a complex, slightly sweet flavor balanced by five different hop varieties. The addition of free-range coastal waters and Rogue's proprietary PacMan Yeast make this 12-ingredient elixir something Friar Tuck would enjoy! We hope you do too! Monk Madness Ale is brewed with 2-row Pale, Belgian Munich, Belgian Special B, Weyermann Melonoidin, and Amber Malts; Belgian Nobles, Chinook, Amarillo, Centennial, and Summit Hops; measuring in at Plato 18 degrees, ABV 7.4 percent, 68 IBUs, 78 degrees Apparent Attenuation, and 36 Degrees Lovibond. (Editor's Note: these stats are from the bottle, not the website, which differs substantially) A versatile and robust ale, we recommend pairing this with spicy foods, strong cheeses, and/or with dessert.

Bomber. The most distinctive element of the aroma is sweet and sour hop. The hop varieties are hard to discern and are strong or or particularly floral. Murky, dark orangish amber. Large, goldish tan head that mostly lasts. Excellent, excellent, frothy lace. Initial impression is promising with good balance and moderate sweetness. The hop profile is considerable, along the typical levels of a West Coast APA. The only thing holding this brew back is a metallic aspect. From the description, it appears that they through everything but the kitchen sink into this brew. And that’s where the brew suffers a bit. It’s muddled, lacking in purpose and conviction. The hops keep this interesting, but there’s a harsh malty aftertaste that keeps Monk Madness from being a better brew.

Draught at WAH. Dark copper color with a minimal head. Caramel malt and citrus hop aroma. Flavor mostly sweet toffee malt with citrus and pine hops coming through on the finish. A bit of fruity cherry-like esters as well. Kind of sweet, though fairly balanced in the end.

Pint @ Tyler’s Carrboro. In the company of TURDFERGUSON. Sweet aroma, caramel, fruity. little spice. Clean orangy brown color, nice head that quickly faded away. Minor lacing. Sweet spiced flavor with a bitter streak Like aroma and a little tinny. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel, bitter dry finish. Well It wasn’t what I would of guessed by the name. That being said I did enjoy it thought i was tasty, yet a familiar brew. I dunno. Glad I found these notes as I thought I had lost them. Amazing what happens when you go through the top of your dresser.

Bottled - pours a lovely maple syrup brown with a soapy off tan head and light bubbling from carbonation. Smells hoppy and tastes HOPPY! Quite the tastebud paralyzing beer. The rest of the body around the hop is too light. I can barely make out some malt. Not the best of the Rogue batch. Got a hint of that crisp clean taste that comes with every batch of beer processed by Rogue. That’s about all I got. It’s meh.

(Bottle) Shared at the PNW Christmas Party 2006 at Oakes place in Vancouver. The bottle has a picture of Julian from "The Trailer Park Boys"??? Thin, white head with a deep brown body. Very piney. Terribly sweet hoppiness. Almost a woody finish.

Poured a very dark clear orange copper color with a small off-white head. Malty aroma with some sweey fruity notes over hops. Notes of diacetyl seem to be present. Malty flavor with toffee and some sweetnees. Some fruitinees. Pretty bitter semi-dry long finish.

Draught. Clear garnet with a thin creamy head. Toasted malt aroma with notes of hops, alcohol and a little butter. Quite bitter and lean in both body and flavor with just some caramel. Slightly oxidized. Really just an average brown ale that’s too bitter.
