Commercial Description:
Five layers of malt create a complex, slightly sweet flavor balanced by five different hop varieties. The addition of free-range coastal waters and Rogue's proprietary PacMan Yeast make this 12-ingredient elixir something Friar Tuck would enjoy! We hope you do too! Monk Madness Ale is brewed with 2-row Pale, Belgian Munich, Belgian Special B, Weyermann Melonoidin, and Amber Malts; Belgian Nobles, Chinook, Amarillo, Centennial, and Summit Hops; measuring in at Plato 18 degrees, ABV 7.4 percent, 68 IBUs, 78 degrees Apparent Attenuation, and 36 Degrees Lovibond. (Editor's Note: these stats are from the bottle, not the website, which differs substantially) A versatile and robust ale, we recommend pairing this with spicy foods, strong cheeses, and/or with dessert.

From a bargain-priced 22 oz. bottle ($3?). Dark-brown color with some ruby tints and a thin white head. Aroma is a mild nutty malt aroma dominated by hops, but overall the aroma isn’t all that intense. Taste is a messy meld of hops that overwhelms the mix of malts. Meh.

Poured a transparent but very dark ruby amber, most would call it brown with a foamy and lacing off white head. The nose was malty and sweet smelling, no indication of overwhelming hops. Flavor was malty, brown sugar, caramel and english tea. More bitterness on the end than I expected. This was a good beer, but the flavors were a little flat for the style. This compares more to your typical amber ale than an american strong ale.

A new arrival in Coralville, IA. Light tan head with a medium amber body. The aroma is nice and piney with some peanuts and rich toffee. The taste has some rich notes of tea, caramel and a little bit of grapefruit. The full mouthfeel is rich and creamy. Actually, I enjoyed this more than many Rogue beers.

On tap at Tyler’s. Blah. "4 different malts, 4 different hops.." I’ve heard this before, I think it was about the Allagash Four though this tasted nothing like it. A poor attempt at an american strong ale if thats what its supposed to be. Uninteresting and really not that tasty. I wish Rogue would go from making 20 good/fair different "craft" beers to making 5 really good craft beers. Another disappointment from Oregon.

Pour hazed golden yellow with a thin white head...smell is vegetable and yeast...taste was sweet at first, then strangely and grossly bitter...blech!

Well another weird offering from Rogue. I really am not a big fan of their beer but I do like a few. This one is a muddled mess that should have stayed on the drawing board and out of the vats.

22oz bomber. Poured clear light amber with fluffy tan head. Plenty of carbonation. The aroma has a solid grapefruit component with a light sweet maltiness. After a while a little bit of caramel malt aroma began to come out. The flavor is light and bright for the style. There is a full hop flavor of grapefruit, tangerine, a bit of earthiness, a touch of apricot and some pine. There is only a faint ghostly sweet maltiness hiding around the corner from the hops.
