kepano (239), Meudon, France Mar 26, 2008 I’ll make this one quick as it isn’t worth much time. Starts off nicely with a muddy brick body and a lasting beige cream but the nose is a stupefying imbroglio. All I can cry is, "Where are the monks?" Not terribly offensive, but you could hardly find more modern and American. Almost barleywinesque the nose stresses syrupy hops, ripe banana, caramel, soap and honey. The flavor starts off with mildly unpleasant over-steeped white tea but the dégringolade continues from there. The intense bitterness is appalling, suggesting old socks, perfume and orange peel. I opt for a quick swallow, hoping to abort the looming disaster but encounter a final burst of acridity. The aftertaste is what I imagine sucking a on a nasty old teabag would be like. My notes concerning the mouthfeel actually read "Uggh..." Rogue is generally well regarded, which is perhaps why my words are harsher than my score, but this is a flippant brew indeed.
jimhilt (1664), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Oct 18, 2009 Pours a two finger cream head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Cloudy amber/brown color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Caramel nose. Flavor is some caramel sweetness but mostly a hoppy wood. Lingering hoppy aftertaste. $6.49 for a 22oz bottle from Manchester Wine and Liquors Manchester, CT. thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Aug 29, 2009 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a medium sized head of foamy finely sized tan colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a hazy with fine particulate softly carbonated and a fair lacing. The smooth aroma was brown malt and dark malt. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a biting aftertaste. The flavor contained notes of mild hops dark malt and brown malt. A decent one that I would consider buying again. drowland (1360), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 17, 2009 Had this awhile back. Not what I was expecting, but pretty nice... sweet start with a nice hoppy finish. Cletus (5002), Connecticut, USA Jun 24, 2009 Pours amber with a thin white head. Smells of nuts, dark fruit, residual sugar, molasses. Tastes of roasted malt and spicy with lots of fruitiness on the finish. Not at all what I was expecting. Vertical Bacon Strips (874), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jun 14, 2009 Red / orange brew that poured a weird coloured head that somehow appeared greenish brown, then just settled into a tan colour with ok retension and almost zero lacing. My second pour was much rougher and produced a nice thick cap that left a huge ammount of lacing everywhere. Aroma has lots of fresh fruit - mainly some dark nutty fruit and grapefruit, slight spice, good ammount of floral tones, slight malt, root beer? grape gum? I swear I keep noticing chocolate here and there...Taste is per the usual with Rogue - grapefruit and bitter and the usual malt content but this time the noticable malts were quite rich and roasted. The roasted malts that really come out when qutie warm but still get hammered down by the bitterness, which is becomming qutie a drag with these Rogue beers, I mean, does every single beer have to be like this? You get a Rogue in whatever style and it’s always heavily hopped to the point where one should wonder why every style needs this.....I digress...Nice sour and spicy bitter punch that really sticks to the roof of your mouth. Smooth beer that is just a bit thicker than medium bodied with tons of soft carbonation. If you let it get almost room temperature, then and only then can the malts dominate the aftertaste. Like most Rogue brews this one is packed with flavour and always highly drinkable and only recieves above average marks due to the complexity that can be found during a lengthy consumption period. I’ll add that the malts are quite tasty Cirrhosis (610), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jun 8, 2009 "Better then average looking beer but kind of boring, brown no visible floaties, with half inch of head and had amazing retention. Aroma is sweet but also bitter there is very mild but very noticeable alcohol, the warmer it got a sour wood like aroma starts to appear. I think I just figured out that the sourness is hops. I like this aroma it’s not over powering or even that good its complex and interesting, I’ve been sniffing for 25 minuets now. Mouth feel is light and crisp and has some very nice carbonation. Tasty bitterness very mild hoppiness and great tasting malts, lots of earthy tones with a mild alcohol finish, light and refreshing sweet and crisp. I like this brew you can drink it any time but its still dark and flavor full. Review done while watching Canada’s worst handy man." Rciesla (3500), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA May 8, 2009 Bottle. This was something i love before i got a true taste of Belgian beers. Orange brown pour with a white head. Caramel, cherry, pear, and strong hoppy grapefruit.
A decent beer just not much of a Belgian ale. FROTHINGSLOSH (1961), GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 20, 2009 Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a ruby chestnut color with a large orange-tan head. The aroma was sweet, fruity and hoppy though a bit rough. The flavor was tangy, bitter, nutty and rough with harsh fruity and floral hops and a touch of caramel and pine. The finish was long, bitter and harsh.
