| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Nov 13, 2006 draught. Pours amber with no real head. The aroma is certainly tart with loads of grapefruit and a slightly chalky note. The hops are right up front in the mouth and very well defined. I noticed just a modicum of Belgian type-spiced-sweetness, but I was intentionally seeking it. It probably would’ve gone unnoticed under the hop blast and caramel wash otherwise. The beer itself, though not anything like the description, is very well balanced and serves as an excellent vessel for satisfying hop delivery. This really fits into the catalogue of overly hoppy beers that Rogue experiments with by doing slight, strange alterations to a predictable recipe. I enjoyed it. kiefdog (1655), Tampa, Florida, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Dec 28, 2008 22oz bottle from Countryside Liquors (Tampa, FL). Pours a dark amber to brown color with a one finger tan head that settles quickly but provides lacing to the glass. Aroma is malty and sweet with notes of floral hops, citrus, caramel, honey. Flavor is much of the same with nuts, spice, and notes of molasses and grapefruit. Generally medium body with a crisp hop finish. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 8/20 | Jan 16, 2007 Courtesy of Pailhead. Brown with minimal head. Huge vegetal aroma, cabbage, and alcohol. Flavor is all oxidized hops and malt. Really thin body. Dissapointed in general. TURDFERGUSON (1612), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Dec 10, 2006 On tap at Tyler’s. Blah. "4 different malts, 4 different hops.." I’ve heard this before, I think it was about the Allagash Four though this tasted nothing like it. A poor attempt at an american strong ale if thats what its supposed to be. Uninteresting and really not that tasty. I wish Rogue would go from making 20 good/fair different "craft" beers to making 5 really good craft beers. Another disappointment from Oregon. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 9, 2007 22oz bomber-Pours a cloudy/murky brown body with a nice tan head which has an aroma of hops, sweetness, and a little malt. The taste comes across initially as a bit tart then moves into a nice malt flavor and finishing with a small amount of hops. Don’t know where the Monk comes from but a decent tasting beer that I would not go out of my way to purchase. TheBeerOrg (1595), Kentucky, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Dec 6, 2006 Updated: Dec 7, 2006Pours dark amber with a mostly receding light tan head. Aroma of bready aromatic malt, mild grapefruit, PNW hops, dates, and nutmeg. Taste is spicy, acidic, and quite unique. Spiciness is contributed by both the hops and yeast, but this tends to muddy the perceived qualities of this beer. Mouthfeel is full bodied and resinous with lush carbonation. What is this beer trying to be? I know Belgian brewers don’t like being pigeon-holed into ’brewing to style’, but this just feels like an "everything but the kitchen sink" beer. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 10, 2007 From a 22 oz. bomber bottle with a list of ingredients and short blurb on right side of bottle.
Poured a reddish, golden hued brown with a foamy off-white head that settled in a sudsy lacing, small amount of ringed, laced sticking.
Aromas of grapefruity with the rind, floral, resiny hops, a light backing of roasted malts and a distinctive fruitiness from the Pacman yeast.
Good carbonation and a crisp, dryish, hop slick, creamy smooth light-medium bodied mouthfeel.
A nice Northwest hoppy taste, citric rind, earthy leafiness, resiny, a slick and lingering soft bitterness on the tongue, a light caramel maltiness, a subtle fruitiness, the alcohol is well masked and is warming in the back of the throat, and a dryish hoppy, yeasty, light sweet malty finish.
An another unique ale from Rogue, easy quaffability, if you like Rogue beers, then this is a must try.
