| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jun 7, 2007 This beer pours a deep amber color with light brown hints. The head is light tan with a small amount of lacing. The smell is some light caramel and earthy tones. The taste was very thin and left a lot to be desired on the palate. For all the layers of malt and hops that they advertise, I would have expected something a little more complex and flavorful. MrRain (442), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 26, 2007 22oz bottle poured in a shaker. Monk Madness pours an awful diareah color with a clumpy head that resembles mold. It has a very nice toffee aroma with a touch of butter and yeast. The flavor is is quite unique and utterly delightful. Toffee makes another appearance in the taste along with the butter. The hops are superbly balanced. There are coffee, rasin and heavy bread flavors more typical of a stout yet there are barley wine reminders hidden in there as well. As I read through the other descriptions on ratebeer I see a very wide array of descriptions. I can easily see why. This beer is complex and hard to narrow down. This beer doesn’t make me think of Belgian abbey ales at all though so if that’s what you’re looking for, go somewhere else. If I had to suggest one improvement it would be to make the beer a tad thicker. It’s ever-so-slightly thin. AR (438), Georgia, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 24, 2007 Distinguishable malts and hops. Not the smoothest, especially compared to mother Rogues. Similar to an IPA, but nothing great. DarkMagus (433), San Jose, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 6, 2007 Moderately hazy reddish-amber color. Thick, foamy, sticky off-white head. Very malty aroma with a bit of hops and some caramel fruitiness. The flavor is primarily malty, but also has significant citrusy hops which create a very sharp bitter finish. Pretty interesting but I wanted the hops to be a bit more in the background. A bit strange and unbalanced, but unique and pretty good. gearbike (421), West Bloomfield, Michigan, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Dec 19, 2006 Light mahogany with frothy slow to disipate head. Smells of carmel with some fruits. Very malty creats a thick chewy taste. The hops do not mix well with the texture. kreepindeth (405), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 20, 2007 Pours a muddy brown with almost no head at all. Aroma like metallic hops. Stinging hop mouthfeel makes it difficult to detect any malt notes. I expect this to taste like a Belgian but it’s not anywhere near as sweet. Has some alcohol in the finish. Not the best beer, but not bad either. jmikolich (405), Athens, Ohio, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 12, 2007 22oz, not bad, not sure how old this was, but easily a sweeter less yeasty belgian, done with the american touch, not bad by any stretch but not distinguished from any other beer. just okay. Translucent copper with a thin tan head.
Aroma is juicy citrusy hops, with a carmely malt back.
Flavor is mostly hoppy with some roasty carmelized malts, and some very well hidden dark fruits.
Nice beer just not what I was expecting from something called Monk Madness.
