Commercial Description:
Five layers of malt create a complex, slightly sweet flavor balanced by five different hop varieties. The addition of free-range coastal waters and Rogue's proprietary PacMan Yeast make this 12-ingredient elixir something Friar Tuck would enjoy! We hope you do too! Monk Madness Ale is brewed with 2-row Pale, Belgian Munich, Belgian Special B, Weyermann Melonoidin, and Amber Malts; Belgian Nobles, Chinook, Amarillo, Centennial, and Summit Hops; measuring in at Plato 18 degrees, ABV 7.4 percent, 68 IBUs, 78 degrees Apparent Attenuation, and 36 Degrees Lovibond. (Editor's Note: these stats are from the bottle, not the website, which differs substantially) A versatile and robust ale, we recommend pairing this with spicy foods, strong cheeses, and/or with dessert.

Big bottle. Half inch plus creamy cloudy head. Copper beer. Have a cold but pick up some malt, hops, cinnamon and nutmeg. Interesting spice flavour must be from the combination of hops. Malty body. Complex as expected from the ingredients. For some reason it doesn’t dazzle.

At the 2007 Big Beer, Belgians, & Barleywines Festival in Vail. Pours an amber color with an impressive off white head that leaves really nice lacing. The nose is just outstanding with caramel sweetness and citrus hops. The flavor has a pronounced and fantastic bitterness.

Bottle. Ruby-mahogony beer with a beige head. Sweet malt and backing grapefruit/pine hop aroma. Flavor has a lot going on and the first couple sips show a bit of a muddled beer. Lots of malt - caramel, roast with hops (mostly grapefruit and pine). LIngering hops, malt and muddled beer. It needs to be simplified.

Pours a clear reddish brown color with a thin offwhite head. Aroma and flavor of resinous and fruity hops with toasted malt and a bitter finish. The body is light to medium with a creamy texture and soft carbonation.

Bottle: Black cherry in color, large foamy beige head, sticky lacing.   Pale malt nose, slightly roasty, somewhat greenish hop tinge.   Flavor is fairly hop oriented, with the malts taking the back seat.   The malts come across as being slightly roasted, with a faint cocoa aspect at the end.   This appears to be a weak Pale Ale with malts that are a bit darker than what you would normally use.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Boring finish, a little weak at the end.   I was thinking this would be somewhat Belgian like, but nope.   Not good, not bad, just very middle of the road.   Yawn...

Clear copper body with a little beige head. Well malted and generously hopped. Basic moderately roasted and caramelized malts flavour. Hops make-up in quantity what they lack in expressiveness. Slight rotten fruits flavours but not really unpleasant. Rather ordinary and unadventurous American Strong Ale. Monks’ madness ain’t what it used to be, Rasputin would be bored to death.

Bomber. Pours deep mahogany with a big moussy off-white head. Nose is kind of an in-between state; husky and maybe a bit acidulated but nothing too overpowering. Not as yeasty as my suspicions would have led me to believe when I was driving this beer home from the store (you know, a mock Belgian from Rogue, gotta smell yeasty, but no). Big roasty gingery attack, and those notes carry through to the spicy/bitter finish. I don’t really know what the hell this is but it’s good, and it’d be a good beer for the right dish (game, mild bbq, bold/savory hors d’oeuvres). I’ll happily drink whatever the naysayers leave behind.

22oz bomber. Poured clear light amber with fluffy tan head. Plenty of carbonation. The aroma has a solid grapefruit component with a light sweet maltiness. After a while a little bit of caramel malt aroma began to come out. The flavor is light and bright for the style. There is a full hop flavor of grapefruit, tangerine, a bit of earthiness, a touch of apricot and some pine. There is only a faint ghostly sweet maltiness hiding around the corner from the hops.
