I am going to get another bottle this week! ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 30, 2006 Bomber. The most distinctive element of the aroma is sweet and sour hop. The hop varieties are hard to discern and are strong or or particularly floral. Murky, dark orangish amber. Large, goldish tan head that mostly lasts. Excellent, excellent, frothy lace. Initial impression is promising with good balance and moderate sweetness. The hop profile is considerable, along the typical levels of a West Coast APA. The only thing holding this brew back is a metallic aspect. From the description, it appears that they through everything but the kitchen sink into this brew. And that’s where the brew suffers a bit. It’s muddled, lacking in purpose and conviction. The hops keep this interesting, but there’s a harsh malty aftertaste that keeps Monk Madness from being a better brew. mreeves (257), Sammamish, Washington, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 1, 2007 I was a little surprised to be served this one in a pint glass at the Issaquah Rogue location given the name, and was even more perplexed when it didn’t really taste like a Belgian ale to me. Too hoppy for the style. Just kind of a weird, though somewhat tasty, rendition of a Belgian ale (of some sort). Brownish color, plenty of hops (too many), yeast is the standard Rogue yeast which fails to give it any Belgian-style flavor. jb (1063), Rochester, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 16, 2007 Orangy-brown look with thick tan long-lasting head. Beautiful. Cinnamon, fresh baking bread in the nose. Creamy palate, but a little thin in body. Some hops. Not sure why this is classed as American Strong ale. Very enjoyable nonetheless. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 26, 2006 Deep mahogany with a tan creamy head. Sticky spots of lacing. Lots of sweet aromas with a good deal of citrus and floral hops. Citrus is a light orange or grapefruit. Light grassy or pine hint to it. Kind of buried beneath the rest. Caramel malts are abundant. Tons of citrus and floral hops in the flavor. Bitter as well as rich and malty. A little heat. Definately pick up on the Belgian malts in there. A little toasty. Robust palate that is a touch cloying. Bitterness and floral flavors rest on the tongue at the end. Not too bad. FOAMer (38), Bartlesville, Oklahoma, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 16, 2007 Pours with a large long lasting light tan head. Aromas of plum and raisins. Lightly oxidized aroma enhance the dried fruit aromas. Fruity as as expected with a light American hop finish in the aroma. Flavors match aroma, oxidozed sherry like with a plum/prune rasin quality. Bitterness is present but balances the Special B malt character. jayme9874 (756), Hamburg, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 5, 2006 A copper/a,ber color. Nice head and lace. Earthy aroma, citrusy, tangy hops. Medium bodied, lots of hop flavor, chinook and centennial stand out. Lots of tea leaves? The malt is solid but the nuances do not come out, I mean its made with Belgium malts and you wouldnt know it, hops are too in the frontend. That being said, its a quality brew and worth a shot, especially if your a fan of Rogue. roder60 (1039), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 16, 2006 Pours a nice bubbly medium brown color with no head to speak of. Aroma is hoppy, mostly grapefruit and pine needles. Flavor is smooth, slightly sweet, light and crisp followed by a hoppy finish. Overall, not bad, but definitely not expected.
