Commercial Description:
Five layers of malt create a complex, slightly sweet flavor balanced by five different hop varieties. The addition of free-range coastal waters and Rogue's proprietary PacMan Yeast make this 12-ingredient elixir something Friar Tuck would enjoy! We hope you do too! Monk Madness Ale is brewed with 2-row Pale, Belgian Munich, Belgian Special B, Weyermann Melonoidin, and Amber Malts; Belgian Nobles, Chinook, Amarillo, Centennial, and Summit Hops; measuring in at Plato 18 degrees, ABV 7.4 percent, 68 IBUs, 78 degrees Apparent Attenuation, and 36 Degrees Lovibond. (Editor's Note: these stats are from the bottle, not the website, which differs substantially) A versatile and robust ale, we recommend pairing this with spicy foods, strong cheeses, and/or with dessert.

Pours a transparent dark copper amber with a thin, coating of spotty-lacing off-white head. Aroma of sweet doughy caramel malt with a hint of butterscotch and citrus. Body starts fairly full, and lightly sweet, but dries out toward a bittering hoppy, slightly earthy finish with a hint of tartness and warmth. It seems like it wants to be a Belgian strong ale, but isn’t sweet enough, and seems overly bitter.

Rusty body with a modest beige head. Aroma has sweet Munich malt signatures with notes of caramel, doughnuts, toast and cherries, plus mild crusty hops. Lots of caramelized qualities in the flavor plus substantial bitterness. Palate gives a pseudo-dry impression with coarse dextrins. I don’t get this, nor do I really care for it.

Amber color with off-white head. Light pepper on the nose. Malt comes through up front with an hoppy, bitter oily tabcco finish.

(Rating #946)

Bottle: Dark auburn color, nice head and no lacing. The nose is a bit spicy with light grassy yeast and hop along with a bit of caramel and sweet plum and chewy dark rye and cherry. The flavor is a bit off, too clean and light. Neither Monk nor Madness. Finishes creamy and a bit malty with light bitterness. Eh. Thanks to Indiana Red.

Draft @ Mellow Mushroom WestChase

Please explain to me what similarity this beer has to any beer Belgian other than some common themed malts and the existence of water and yeast, which are not Belgian… The body had some hints of toffee, brown sugar and a light smokiness, but that was far overpowered by the aggressive alpha American hops. Was this an actual recipe or leftovers and a time crunch to brew a new beer?
I was most let down that it was not even an attempt at a Belgian style, but a ruse to provoke my curiosity. One doesn’t order a beer self titled STOUT and receive a glass of milk unnoticed, no difference here.

Draft from DRE. Coppery ruby egded pour with aroma of hops, sme peaty, earthy notes, and some bready doughy malt. The taste is unbalanced, with some dry hops clashing with the peaty, earthy, doughy malt. Not horrible, but not one I’d revisit again.

Color=Brown
Aroma=Malt, Coffee and LOTSA Hops.
Flavor=HOPS...something beneath that I think probably tastes good, though it isn’t even remotely Belgian, but I can’t be sure because of all the hops.
Overall=I am starting to loathe Rogue. <P> Seriously Rogue seems to operate just like many of the Macro brewers but from the extreme opposite end. They just hop every beer they make all to piss as opposed to making them flavorless. This one is actually not all that bad, but it’s so not even remotelt Belgian (as the name implies) it annoys me the way their constant rebranding of what I suspect is actually only the 4 beers they make, annoys me.
