2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle. It poured a red color with a white head. The aroma was malty, with rice and roast. The taste was similar to the aroma with roasty bitterness and more malts. Not my style, but still decent.

3.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Wondeful beer by rogue. Has a dark look and the malt comes through in stages from caramel to the roast on the back end.

I was expecting a little more out of this beer. Was better than average, just after trying many other Rogue beers, I thought this would be somewhat better since it’s sold in 22 oz. bottles. I also watch Iron Chef and like Morimoto’s cooking style, so was curious to try this. Maybe this beer is more about the label, or is what he likes to drink? Don’t think I’ll be paying that price again. Would buy in a Japanese restaurant though if they served it. Might be better with Sushi.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a surprisingly clear dark reddish brown with a good off-white head. Aroma is bitter hops, malt, raisins, non-sweet chocolate, spice, fruit, citrus, bread. Taste is malty, caramel, smooth, dark bitter chocolate, hoppy, spicy, fruity, citrus. Very different beer, don’t know why everyone seems to hate on it though, I think it is a solid beer, maybe not for the price however.

Pitch black with a thick beige head this soba beer has a pleasing fruity aroma with a dab of spice. The taste is decent chocolate, raisins, graham & soba spiciness. Quite a good solid black ale. I prefer Rogue’s regular soba ale but this black variant’s solid too.

65 cl bottle (5%) @ lusikka, BBE 12/2014
Aroma is rather odd, feels like some spicy soup. Some soy sauce, spices and toffee typical to English ales. Also hints of sweet licorice. Flavour has harsh malt, toffee, hay, licorice and weird spices. Finishes with some grapefruit-like hops. Not my thing.

650 ml bottle. Pours a black colour with a small off-white head. Aroma of toasted malts, dark chocolate and yeastiness. Flavour of harsh grainy malts, earthiness, mild saltiness, nuttiness and bread. Light bodied and thin mouthfeel. Not my thing.

Pours dark brown with a smooth head. Aroma of malts, spices, toffee, syrup, hints of roastiness and earthy notes. Taste is smooth, spicy and a bit weird with hints of earthy notes, tea, toffee, syrup and roastiness. Finish is roasty, a bit weird and spicy with hints of earthiness and syrup. A bit strange.
