lagermonkey (597), Marietta, Georgia, USA May 10, 2005 Pours a clear gold with a thin persistent ivory head. Good lace. Smell is crisp and grassy (soba/buckwheat?). Some light hops detected.
Taste is quite bitter and crisp, from the malt I would say. Is this soba malt I am tasting? Some very persistent hops flavors and lots of grassy bitter malt in there. Really, really crisp. Not light bodied but not much more than that either. It’s a wel done, nicely balanced, interesting beer. But not really that drinkable for me. maybe I dont’ like the soba?
asheft (1374), Marburg, Germany May 6, 2005 Orange-amber with a thistle fluff top that clings to the glass. Aroma is a dusty orange zest with some faint crystal malt. Flavour starts off very interesting with a spicy wood mixed with an interesting bitterness that comes partially from hops and partially from somewhere else. The somewhere else bittering turns into a gagging astringency that doesn’t seem to be from tannins--medicinal. There’s some orange and herbal spice in there too. Light to medium body with moderate carbonation. I usually really like the Rogue beers; this one’s a dud. jgentgesdo (564), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA May 5, 2005 Pours golden with thin tan head. Nose is mild creamy wheats, apricot, spice. The flavor is tangy, more apricot and golden fruits, spice, and Sugar Golden Crisps. Slightly acerbic aftertaste. OK but not for 6 bucks a bottle. Zeswaft (1000), Seattle, Washington, USA May 3, 2005 I dont have much to say about this beer other than disappointment and disgust. Not so much in the flavor but the experience. I bought this disguised as a fancy "Morimoto Soba Ale." Sounds sweet and has cool Japanese characters on it. I come home and look it up and it’s "buckwheat ale". How disgusting does that sound? I fought with myself to open it. I thought that i was about to drink beat juice or something. Turns out it’s not that bad. Doesn’t really have much flavor, watery and light bodied. Only hints of wheat on the aftertaste. With all the other sweet Rogue beers buy something else. Cows9 (41), Dumont, New Jersey, USA Apr 28, 2005 Aroma is a bit dull. Pours dark golden color. Flavor is a bit doughy up front. This turns into a surprisingly good, interesting flavor of orange peels. It finishes a touch hoppy. A bit watered down in flavor. This could be a really good food beer. though. Not bad, not great. VTHopHead (895), Barre, Vermont, USA Apr 24, 2005 Bomber - Pours a cloudy darkish amber in color with a foamy white head that quickly fades to a rim a round the glass. Aroma is hoppy and slightly citrus. Flavor is of citrus hops. Finish is medium bitter and hoppy. A good effort... I like the hops! Rastacouere (5551), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Apr 23, 2005 Big endurant white head, frothy and rocky tops the clean effervescent clearish golden hue. Slightly tart cereals aroma, buckwheat becoming more apparent as it warms up. Crisp toasted biscuity malt flavor though in a more cerealic/hay/grass reminiscent fashion than straight sweet way. Quaffable offering from Rogue, no astringency fortunately. A fresh hoppiness shines in the finish, pilsner like despite the americanized hops, dry and grassy. Made me think of rice ultimately through its vienna? malts. Biting carbonation, well rounded medium body. Pretty balanced, definitely one that grew on me rather than being being good from the first sip. Pretty good stuff, but too standard to be worth a premium price. jackamackson (127), USA Apr 8, 2005 hazy orange pour. small frothy white head. aroma is lemony, but not very strong. flavor is a really mellow, slightly fruity, kinda wheaty(soba?). slightly bitter in the end. watery, but drinkable.
