JoeMcPhee (4911), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Dec 13, 2004 Rogue Morimoto Soba. Pale amber colour with a touch of haziness and a thick sticky white head. Smells like toasted hazelnuts, some faint caramel, lemon, and some acidity. There is also a smell that I can only say in flour-like. Flavour is pretty clean, light toast, a bit of sweetness with some zestiness and spice in the finish. tsarman (794), Northern, New Jersey, USA Dec 12, 2004 Decent amount of bitterness. The feeling in the mouth was also pleasant. A decent amount of spice that I figure comes from the buckwheat. A decent beer, but not a great one from Rogue. IndianaRed (1553), Boise, Idaho, USA Dec 3, 2004 Bottle Pours a pale/medium yellow golden color with a quite large creamy/foamy head which lingers quite a while. Very thick heavy lacing. Aromas a very pale and lager-ish, slightly sweet and a bit metallic maybe. Flavors are indead roasted nutty, but kind of sour too. The hops is not too strong and there is also some spice flavor I cant put my finger on. Feel is light and soft with a lively carbonation. Interesting and different. meathookjones (245), Sterling, Virginia, USA Dec 3, 2004
Ahhh good ol Iron Chef Morimoto with a line of beers in conjunction with rogue, this could be quite a tasty marriage. I sure know the man can cook his ass of but what can he contribute to beer, creativity is the only thing I can thing of hence the Soba Ale. Pours out a clear amber color with a monster white head that quickly drops to a cap of bubbles that leaves a very nice lacing around the glass. The aroma is of a wheat grassy nature with earth tones from the hops and malt, a little subdued it seems for such a brazen chef. The taste is fairly similar with grassy bitter hops being accompanied by the wheat flavor, a lemon zest and a taste I am unfamiliar with possibly the soba. Surprisingly a very light flavor overall but refreshing and enjoyable. Mouthfeel is thin with good carbonation and this has good drinkability. An interesting but uninspired flavor here and I would expect some thing more from a team up of two creative entities like Rogue and Morimoto. Definitely the my least favorite of the three in the series. IslandHaole (1035), Onna-Son, Okinawa-Ken, Japan Nov 30, 2004 This bottle was labeled (well painted, no label) "Soba Beer" in Japanese. The ABV is listed as 2.9%, probably a different recipe for the Japanese market.
An Orange/Amber color with a slight haze and some chunks floating around. Tart vegetal smell with some hops present. Has an earthy sweet flavor, with a tart follow and a lingering bitter aftertaste. It’s an unusual combination but it works for me. Seems to me this is what an Old English Ale would taste like. I do like this beer! brewblackhole (1367), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Nov 29, 2004 Light gold orangish color, refreshing sparky hop aroma, a slight sweet something in the taste that quickly becomes dry and very light. Not special enough to pay premium price Reid (1085), Salem, Oregon, USA Nov 27, 2004 Bought as Morimoto Signature Soba Ale.
Bought in the 22 oz bomber.
Nice enough beer to look at , a dark golden almost light brown, small bubbly white head, that fades fast.
mm unusual aroma above the unusually subdued hops ( for Rogue), its a slightly creamy roasty aroma which i suspect may be the Soba..also buttery in aroma .
taste seems to be dominated by the soba at first ,but a strong bitterness from the hops emerges near the end of the mouthful. A slightbuttery taste, almost creamy also.
I found the feel of this beer very nice and smooth on the tongue, very enjoyable.
Very drinkable beer..though not up to Rogues usual stereotype.
rogueminded (41), Newport, Oregon, USA Nov 22, 2004 An amazing Rogue!!! A smooth brown ale, after tast is smooth therapeutic and lasting. A different taste, but it simply works. Go enjoy.
