The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy!

75cl bottle @ Shrewsbury Beer Share, Sep 15, many thanks to Simon. Pours hazy orange with foamy white head. Aroma of marzipan. Initial pithy blood orange merging with a strong boozy sticky sweet resin. Sure itís juicy but just far too hoppy to be palatable.

This is a well-described beer. High bitterness and high sweetness. A little fig - like fruit rounds out the malt.

Bomber, shared between five at the 16th Sep 2015 Shrewsbury Bottle Exchange Group meeting: cheers Simon for this offering. Heavy alcohol feel throughout this tropical fruit flavoured monster, I liked it from the first sniff and lick. Mini haze to the golden amber pour, wispy topping. Hops first and foremost in both the nose and taste, the malts not far behind in this semi-sweet style mixture. I do not like Pigeon Holing beers anyway, so I had no problem with this hybrid brew.

In between styles usually donít work. Hereís a perfect example. Poured a dark orange with a small off white head. Aroma was of caramel, grapefruity hops and booze. Flavor similar, too sweet to be a good ipa, too bitter to be a classic barleywine. Cloying and a mess.

Bottle consumed at Cropredy, Fairports Annual Reunion Festival 2015, Thurs 13th, shared with Craig. A mid/warm gold beer with a white filmy head. Really oily, silky, syrupy, very busy with lots going on here. This is very hoppy and therefore I can see the IPA connection but also it does lean towards Barley Wine in fact I think itís sits there more so for me. I like this, ok itís fiercely sweet but there is bags of flavour, juicy hops, toffee, fruit, itís all in here. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov16 3.9

Orange color with a small head. Strong alcohol and biscuit aroma. Dry, grainy, biscuity flavor. Slight orange. Solid bitterness. Full body.

Tap at rogue public house. Good light color and smooth. The mix of ipa bitterness helps improve the barley wine. Pretty strong. Would do one but then move to another.

Hazy orange - amber beer, tidy cream colour head. Palate is a little viscous with good fine carbonation. Creamy malts, slightly thick and semi sweet. Trace of caramel. Dry floral bitterness. Light citric peel. Hop spice. Smooth, semi dry pithy bitter finish. Good one but I was expecting to be blown away and I wasnít.

On tap, into a standard bar pint glass -- Active head, intense and exciting aroma. Malt is very much a DIPA base but brewed at BW strength and intensity. Good beer with my meal, but whew, drinker beware of multiples. Boozy and tasty.
