The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy!

Bottle shared by oRos. Pours cloudy blonde with a transient off-white head and a fruity aroma. There is an uncarbonated light fruit flavor with a dry finish and a warm alcohol trail Certainly not a typical barleywine in that the mouthfeel is not thick and the flavor lacks sweetness. Still a pretty good beer.

UPDATED: AUG 26, 2014 Served on tap in a snifter Appearance – The beer is served a clear deep orange-amber color with a tiny head of white foam. The head fades very fast leaving a light level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is biggest a sweet smell with tons of caramel and toffee as well as some big fruity aromas of tangerine, orange, and apricot, Along with these are some lighter hoppy aromas of a grapefruit and grassy smell as well as a bit of a boozy aroma of a rum like nature. Taste – The taste begins with a very bready and doughty taste with lots of caramel and toffee sweetness. Along with these flavors are a little bit of a citrus sweetness as well as a moderate showing of a grapefruit hop flavor. As the taste advances the grapefruit grows stronger in nature and is joined by some grassy and herbal hop taste. The herbal hops and grassy flavors actually out pace the grapefruit more toward the end all while a bit of a boozy flavor joins the profile. The sweet flavors all the while remain relatively constant, and in the end with the mix of tastes that is left it ends up leaving a somewhat warmingly sweet and moderately hopped flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and chewier side with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. For the sweeter and more malty flavors of the brew mixed with the moderate hop and yeast the feel is rather nice and creates a nice slower sipper. Overall – An alright Barleywine overall. It has a decent hop blend but also maintains a good level of sweet, malt, and booze. Not a bad try, but nothing all that exceptional as Barleywines go.

Pint on tap at the portland brewpub. Gold color, cloudy, good lacing. Really good taste overall, it’s got that barleywine taste at the end that marries well with the hops, actually. What a finisher...the master finisher. Weird wicked genre-defying beer, glad i tried it.

Ok calm down, why did I taste saltiness? Where did all the beer go because there was a lot more in the glass then there is now, that is one easy drinking beer. Paler and cloudier than I thought it might be. There is a strong aroma with this, and I wish I could figure it out, it’s not distracting just elusive. Bitter but not hop bitter, Finish is not a long or sharp either. I’d say that this was then fair to middling and quirky and therefore popular.

Nice blue bottle. Bomber. Pours a hazy orange color with subtle head. Nice aromas of caramel bread malt with floral citrus hops. Light fruits. Light candy notes. Wow. A big beer. Big malty notes provide some balance for the bitter hop finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours into the glass a hazy orange with an initial foamy head that diminishes to a light ring of suds. The nose is of oranges, Caramel and light alcohol notes. Flavors include sweet Caramel, candied oranges, a hint of Tangy citrus and finishes with a bold bitter back of peppering hops. Full-bodied and oily on the palate, this is a great nightcap Or aperitif for meals. Gorgeous brew! Love the complexity, substance and marrying of two of my favorite styles.

Fad: Lysegul helt diset øl med et lille skumhoved. Ret grim egentlig. Duften er meget humlet men sød og afundet. Smagen er ekstrem drikbar uden den store bitterhed men med megen sødme til at bakke den tropiske humle op. Lækker men grim øl.

Pours a lightly cloudy orangish amber with a frothy white head. Aroma of caramel, citrus hops, grass, tropical fruits and sweet malts. Taste is caramel, sweet pale malts, grassy hops, resin and alcohol. Blended decently well together but something seems a bit off... Maybe it’s still too young and could use more aging.

Pours a hazy amber-copper with a medium sized white head that sticks all up the glass. Aroma is tropical fruit, grass, citrus, malty and caramel. Flavour is rich malt, caramel, moderate alcohol, heavy hop oils giving a good thicker mouth feel for such a high abv beer, med-high bitterness that lingers a little into the finish.
