BeerHawk (1175), Huntsville, Alabama, USA Jun 10, 2006 2003 Bottle. Poured brown in color with a thin tan head. Very enjoyable aroma of chocolate, molasses, and dark fruits. The flavor gave out milk chocolate, licorice, dark fruits, and light alcohol. As it warmed some roastiness as detected also. Medium to full body that was thick and warming. A very nice sipper. Beerdedone (1873), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 1, 2006 Bottle sampled with Stegosaurus .Pours brown with a deep beige head. Aroma of alcohol, citrus, roast, and hops. Flavor is alcohol, bitterness, and citrus. I expected more from a style i love, but it is good. bitbucket (2026), Kirkland, Washington, USA May 28, 2006 Ceramic bomber, courtesy after4ever. Pours dark amber with a slight tan head . Aroma of roasty malt and hops. Full body, light carbonation, and a creamy taste that is everything I’m looking for in a barleywine: a sweet toffee start and a lingering, hoppy finish, with a little bit of dried fruit/port/raisin in the middle. I need to get another bottle of this an put it down for a couple of years. The taste of this one is vastly different from the 7oz. bottle, which had no carbonation and a lot less to taste. after4ever (2711), Brier, Washington, USA May 28, 2006 Ceramic bomber, opened at BitBucket’s. Pours a gorgeous churning swirling brown, with a little bit of tan head and a lot of very determined carbonation fighting through high-gravity beer. Crisp malt and hops on the nose--smells like a beer that’s happy to smell like beer, instead of trying to smell like fruit or something else. Super flat dry bitter hop finish, but loads of creamy velvet toffee and sweet malt on the attack. Classic straightforward barleywine, but very drinkable both for the style and the ABV. Did a side by side with unfiltered/unfined 7-oz. The UF is just about completely still and tastes like wort. I have to side with the mainstream release in this case. epador (4), USA does not count May 27, 2006 Straight from the Rogue Tap the appearance is deceiving. Not to be consumed quickly, not for the designated driver. winegarner (220), san diego, California, USA May 19, 2006 Poured a deep, clear mahogony with a thin head. Aroma is very complex comtaining caramel, candied fruits, a hint of chocolate, a high level of american citrus hops, and a warming alcoholic burn from the alcohol. Flavors fall short of the aroma with the hops and alcohol still very apparent. Also very watery, especially for the style which should be full bodied. radagast83 (1273), Fairfax, Virginia, USA May 16, 2006 Ceramic bottle. Nice flavor, not as rough as many other barley wine beers are out there. I really found the finish to be quite nice, and not overly rough. turnerm5 (12), Bellingham, Washington, USA May 16, 2006 Dark ceramic bottle with a resealable lid. A price mix-up at Haggen had these in the system for $3.20, so I picked up 6 for the cellar. Dark amber pour with no lasting head. Very strong alcohol aroma, with roasted malt and caramel. Not too hoppy, the alcohol and the malt flavors dominate. This would go very well with a steak or some other rich food.
