GregClow (2493), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 4, 2006 Bottle - 2004 vintage. Very hazy amber-brown colour with a still body and barely any head. Quite ugly looking, to be honest. Nice aroma, though - caramel, brown sugar, hops & alcohol being the primary notes. Mouthfeel is syrupy and warm. Flavour starts quite sweet, with notes of nark fruit and almonds, but the hops really take over in the finish, along with some bitter coffee notes. It’s pretty good stuff, but I’m glad I aged it as I can imagine it was pretty harsh when it was younger. Even now, there’s a bit of booze burn around the edges. RooftopRogue (423), Champaign, Illinois, USA Jan 3, 2006 This beer says hello with an aroma infused with fruit, molasses, and dates. This beer is a hearty dark brown color with a thick almond colored head. This beer enters the mouth thick and its high alcohol level attack the palate immediately. The taste is bitter and consists nutty and prune flavors. The bitterness created by the alcohol stays and stays. oldrtybastrd (1801), Morlautern, Germany/Great Falls, Montana, USA Jan 2, 2006 Updated: Jan 3, 2006Pours a hazy orangish amber color. Aromas of strong malts, citrus, fruit, and alcohol. Flavor big malt taste with fruity finish. Long malt aftertaste. Can really taste the alcohol in this one. Storm (2685), Amager, Denmark Jan 2, 2006 35,5 cl bottle. Yeast at the bottom. Dark ruby colour with a weak head. Great aroma of caramel, malt, dried fruit and a lot of hops. Very tasty flavour of malt, bitterness and vinous, also hints of chocolate and toffee. A really powerful and tasteful barley wine. tennisjoel (931), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA Jan 1, 2006 Attractive looking beer. Opaque maroon color with nice layer of thin head. Taste is very good. A lot of hops balanced out by quite a bit of malt. The only thing I could dock points on for this beer is for Aroma. I couldn’t get a great read. Papsoe (14642), Frederiksberg, Denmark Jan 1, 2006 Updated: Jan 2, 2006(Bottle 35,5 cl) Mahogany brown with a warm, reddish glow and a small, off-white head. The aroma alone is a bombardment of impressions: thick, rich aroma hoppiness and a very vinous touch. The body is strong and overly potent with typical notes of raisins and other dried fruits, plus overripe notes of plums etc. Quite hoppy finish from the 120 IBU. Thanks to Humleimporten for sharing this gem. 291205 CamdenD (606), Madrid, Spain Dec 31, 2005 Very nice hoppy barley wine. Enjoyed on tap at Moan and Dove, aroma is that of a good IIPA and palate is crisp and entirely refreshing for a 10.5% barleywine. Fantastic -- reminded me a bit of the Old School from Dogfish. csbosox (1076), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Dec 26, 2005 Updated: Jan 5, 20072002 bottle, 12oz. Served at 52° in a Duvel tulip. Copper tinged maroon with a "hazy" head and some bubbles along the edges. When swirled, the beer coats the glass. The aroma is still very hoppy with notes of brown sugar, citrus hops, and spice. The initial taste is brown sugar, spice, very appropriate for the holiday season. The citrusy and woodsy hops really peel away the substantial malt flavor and are still very powerful after 3 years. I can only imagine what this is like fresh. The beer is thick and coats the mouth. This is a big ass beer. 7/4/8/5/16
Re-rate. This is not a rerate so much as it is comments on this beer. My review was dead on when I tasted this beer a year ago, but the description is the exact same for this bottle that is 3 years old. This beer is a bruiser and at three years old it still has the spunk of a young’n. Should have seen what 5 or 10 years would have done to this brash lad, I’m figuring that he would come at your swinging, much like you would expact the salty old lad on the bottle to come swinging at ya after a few too many Jameson’s? I gotta bump this beer up for kicking ass a year later.
