4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Brownish red pour with tan head, lingering long enough to lace nicely. The best-smelling beer Iíve had in a while. Nutmeg, warming caramel, jalapeno hops, dark chocolate, espresso, pineapple, and more (Iím sure better names are available for these flavors)--all blend together masterfully. Finish is melted pepper, biting hops and citric acid, sweet rich throat-soothing coffee-chocolate. And more. The blending of these complex elements are extremely impressive, and linger afterward. It leaves me short. Butterscotch! Also butterscotch. And toffee. And red wine.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at Rogue in SF. Raisin and brandy aroma; quite nice. Enormous raisin and grape taste, sweet with some caramel, and a clean ever-so-slightly bitter finish. Very good barley wine.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This is pretty good for a barleywine. They usually are a little too bitter for my liking, but this is well balanced and VERY smooth. I donít know if it is worth the price. Can probably achieve the same result buying a six-pack of Bigfoot Ale for half the price. If you are looking for an expensive luxury beer, and like Barleywine, then is probably worth trying.

i've had the New Crusty, now the old. It's completely different, it's a stand alone, it's a gem. A lovely malty aroma with a fearsome bite, it's delicate on the nose with a good kick at the palate. I love it, i'm glad I split the bottle, cos, wow boy, this one packs a punch.

Dark, thick and with a slow, long running maltiness which fades off into a subtle sweetness at the back of the palate

3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
This did not turn out the way I thought it would. I love barley wine with a good manís fervour, but Iím afraid this isnít a great example. Darkish mahogany coloured with nil head, it had mellow woody aromas and flavours that were reminiscent of biting down on a piece of white oak. It seemed harsher than the preceding two barley wines in a style that tends to be well rounded from its again. Not the case here despite 7 years on the clock, which is unfortunate.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottled. Pours amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of dark fruits, toasted carame, and brown sugar. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry with alcohol. Medium boded, oily to syrupy texture and soft carbonation. A lovely Barley indeed.

Drinking at Toronado at SF Beer Week. More bitter than the Stone Oak. Sweet, malty, strong, but hops most palpable flavor. Notes of caramel.

Despite its surly name, Old Crustacean offers a lot of sweetness. The batch I drank from did, anyway. Of course, two years (the amount of age on my batch) is plenty of time to mellow a big attitude. And I imagine a younger version of Rogueís Barleywine has plenty of attitude considering the 110 IBUís from the Chinook and Centennial hops. As it was, this beer had lots of butterscotch flavor. In fact, Iíve never had a beer that has such a distinct butterscotch taste. The 11.5% ABV means that this beer is strictly a sipper, but itís a solid choice for passing an evening.

Barley wine bottle share on 1/31, 2008 bottle. Pours a cloudy brown with amber highlights and just a faint skin of light off-white head. Hot and hoppy in the flavor. Aroma is great, full of brown sugar and molasses. Complex alcohols change as it warms. Nice hoppy finish, lingers.
