2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
It may not be fair for me to rate this as I prefer British barleywines to American. While I like pale ales and DIPAs, I don’t care for the added hops in my barleywine which is generally the American barleywine style. The British barleywines are much less hoppy.
Still, in my opinion, this one was too bitter for me even for an American barleywine. I almost poured the balance of my glass down the sink. Improved slightly as it warmed . Not my style but even then, I was put off by this beer unfortunately.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
750 ml bottle into snifter; 2013 vintage bottling, 10.75%. Pours hazy deep ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, raisin, plum, fig, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toast, herbal, floral, grass, pine, and herbal/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/earthy hops, dark/bready malt, and dark fruit notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, raisin, plum, fig, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toast, herbal, floral, grass, and herbal/toasted earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, raisin, plum, fig, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toast, herbal, floral, grass, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity and balance of citrus/earthy hops, dark/bready malt, and dark fruit flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a smooth, creamy, and fairly slick/sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome American barleywine. All around great complexity and balance of citrus/earthy hops, dark/bready malt, and dark fruit flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
"a hoppy but well balanced, full bodied barleywine. dark, yeasty, robust. i’ve had better, but this is a pretty solid effort nonetheless. i’d recommend it if they still sold it in 12 oz. bottles for a reasonable price, not $12-13 per 750. Too bad...it ain’t that good."

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a chalice.
The appearance was a dark hazy orange color with red tints closer to the center of the beer. The head was about a finger’s worth of white foaminess gently dissipated to a mushroom cap of a film. The lacing was stringy and sticky.
The smell had a caramel boozy maltiness over top of some vanilla and a little chocolate.
The taste was mainly boozy sweet through the caramel tones.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium to heavy on my tongue. This fairly thick syrupy beer just made me sip it for as long as I could. The carbonation was decent for the style as it was pretty subdued.
Overall, decent Barleywine that seemed to have sat a bit heavier than other Barleywine I’ve had. With the lack of hops in the smell, I’d probably want to say it was closer to the English side but I didn’t get the tobacco aroma. For the price, I probably wouldn’t get it again, though it was nice to try.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Transfer from BA review on 5-22-12-
Poured from 7 oz bottle dated 2010 into snifter
Appearance – Pours a hazy orange- copper color with a huge yellowish tinted head. The head had giant carbonation bubbles that slowly popped over time to leave a wonderful level of lacing.
Smell – The smell is sweet and malty. The sweet aromas are of fruit and sugar with the malty aromas of biscuit and sweet bread. There are lighter notes of alcohol mixed within, which when mixed with the rest of the aromas makes a very pleasant smell.
Taste – The flavor is big of chewy bread up front with a light, almost orange, citrus like flavor. The citrus leaves with an even maltier presence coming into the taste as a big biscuit flavor meets the chewy bread. At along this same time an alcohol flavor enters the taste. It gets stronger and stronger toward the end leaving a somewhat mediciney burn on the tongue in the end.
Mouthfeel – Insanely thick. It is like a thick syrupy-decongestant thickness. It coats the mouth thoroughly letting all the flavors really penetrate the tongue. This with a lower level of carbonation and a the burn create a rather unique mouthfeel.
Overall – Big and potent with a heavy boozy flavor and a wonderful thickness.

Sampled at 4 Hands. 16 year old version. Itvsmells a little dusty and oxidized. But that is obvious. Clear amber. No foam. Fruity aroma and flavor. Very hot. Big heavy malts. It would be cool to taste a new bottle. This was interesting if short of being great.
