Tap at the Rookery. Pours a hazy brown with a thin layer of beige head. Aroma of fruit and caramel. Taste of caramel, some oakiness, and some vanilla.

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a chalice. The appearance was a dark hazy orange color with red tints closer to the center of the beer. The head was about a finger’s worth of white foaminess gently dissipated to a mushroom cap of a film. The lacing was stringy and sticky. The smell had a caramel boozy maltiness over top of some vanilla and a little chocolate. The taste was mainly boozy sweet through the caramel tones. On the palate, this one sat about a medium to heavy on my tongue. This fairly thick syrupy beer just made me sip it for as long as I could. The carbonation was decent for the style as it was pretty subdued. Overall, decent Barleywine that seemed to have sat a bit heavier than other Barleywine I’ve had. With the lack of hops in the smell, I’d probably want to say it was closer to the English side but I didn’t get the tobacco aroma. For the price, I probably wouldn’t get it again, though it was nice to try.

20,7 cl bottle @El Lúpulo Feroz, Oviedo. In short: a mild barley wine.
Pours ery hazy, copper, small off white head. Poor head retention, some lacing. Medium body, soft carbonation, oily texture. Malty, caramel aromas. Taste follows the nose, some liquoriceand liquor notes.

Transfer from BA review on 5-22-12- Poured from 7 oz bottle dated 2010 into snifter Appearance – Pours a hazy orange- copper color with a huge yellowish tinted head. The head had giant carbonation bubbles that slowly popped over time to leave a wonderful level of lacing. Smell – The smell is sweet and malty. The sweet aromas are of fruit and sugar with the malty aromas of biscuit and sweet bread. There are lighter notes of alcohol mixed within, which when mixed with the rest of the aromas makes a very pleasant smell. Taste – The flavor is big of chewy bread up front with a light, almost orange, citrus like flavor. The citrus leaves with an even maltier presence coming into the taste as a big biscuit flavor meets the chewy bread. At along this same time an alcohol flavor enters the taste. It gets stronger and stronger toward the end leaving a somewhat mediciney burn on the tongue in the end. Mouthfeel – Insanely thick. It is like a thick syrupy-decongestant thickness. It coats the mouth thoroughly letting all the flavors really penetrate the tongue. This with a lower level of carbonation and a the burn create a rather unique mouthfeel. Overall – Big and potent with a heavy boozy flavor and a wonderful thickness.

Sampled at 4 Hands. 16 year old version. Itvsmells a little dusty and oxidized. But that is obvious. Clear amber. No foam. Fruity aroma and flavor. Very hot. Big heavy malts. It would be cool to taste a new bottle. This was interesting if short of being great.

Bottle, larger version. Pours a slightly hazy deep amber mahogany color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet caramel malts, fruits, plum, raisin, some earthy bitterness. I have had aged bottles that have held on to the bitterness for years even with oxidation. One of the early craft beers that I enjoyed back in the days of the nip bottle that is still pretty good today.

Sampled at the Knick. Odd aroma - kinda cheesy. Mild vapors with caramel and biscuit, oxidized. Dark copper amber hazy with creamy off-white lacing head. Medium-heavy body with medium carbonation. Warming. Starts dry and hoppy. Caramel. Oxidized flavors. Big bitter notes throughout with sweet alcohol. Sweet finish with lasting bitter hoppy after.

Poured from tap to glass. Amber hue with off white head that dissipated to a moderate ring. Aroma caramel, spicy hops, citrus, pineapple, sugar. Mouthfeel is great with a full body and light carbonation. Taste is sweet initially with a bitter following and ethanol finish. Overall this is a nice brew bit a bit rough on the transitions. This would be great with some age to allow everything to meld together.
