Rusty brown head on top of the muddiest brown malt toughness you’ve ever seen. Hopp aroma to burn off your nose hairs. The first BW I’ve ever had. I thought all BWs were all like this. I wish. Hop bitterness is the ultimate palate killer. A condensed BREWER. Thank you John for getting me to the next level with this beer! dkachur (2439), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA

Strong aroma of brown sugar and dark fruits. The hops come on a bit too strong, lending to a bitter taste. It is balanced out a bit on the back end. YogiBeera (2437), Hamburg, Germany

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 11, 2004 This is the closest to an actual ruby color of any of the barleywines I've had so far.. It's a little light on the head. and has a bitter, hoppy finish, but the there's enough malt in the body to suggest that this better could handle aging for another year or so very well. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 1, 2002 2001 bottle - sharp and harsh. The malts are roasty but sweet with a strong cherry flavor. The IBU is strong - 120 - but unsatisfying. Any hope of balance is gone - I would expect this in an IPA, but not barleywine. Call me unimpressed.
