An unfiltered and unrefined Barleywine. Intense, robust, malty and dark. The cognac of beers. A huge beer in a little bottle, this is a beer designed for sipping. Old Crustacean is brewed with eight ingredients, Great Western Harrington, Klages, Hugh Baird Carastan and Munich Malts, Chinook and Centennial Hops, free-range coastal water and PacMan yeast. Old Crustacean is best when aged for one year.

Awesome bite to this one...strong as all hell, but certainly one worth a sippiní. Unfortunatly, Rogue has done better.

This did not turn out the way I thought it would. I love barley wine with a good manís fervour, but Iím afraid this isnít a great example. Darkish mahogany coloured with nil head, it had mellow woody aromas and flavours that were reminiscent of biting down on a piece of white oak. It seemed harsher than the preceding two barley wines in a style that tends to be well rounded from its again. Not the case here despite 7 years on the clock, which is unfortunate.

Bottled. Pours amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of dark fruits, toasted carame, and brown sugar. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry with alcohol. Medium boded, oily to syrupy texture and soft carbonation. A lovely Barley indeed.

[2/13/15] Draught at Rogue Ales Public House in San Francisco. Dark amber color. Aroma of very resinous hops and some malt. Flavor has some malt and big resinous bitterness. Medium-bodied.

Drinking at Toronado at SF Beer Week. More bitter than the Stone Oak. Sweet, malty, strong, but hops most palpable flavor. Notes of caramel.

Despite its surly name, Old Crustacean offers a lot of sweetness. The batch I drank from did, anyway. Of course, two years (the amount of age on my batch) is plenty of time to mellow a big attitude. And I imagine a younger version of Rogueís Barleywine has plenty of attitude considering the 110 IBUís from the Chinook and Centennial hops. As it was, this beer had lots of butterscotch flavor. In fact, Iíve never had a beer that has such a distinct butterscotch taste. The 11.5% ABV means that this beer is strictly a sipper, but itís a solid choice for passing an evening.

Barley wine bottle share on 1/31, 2008 bottle. Pours a cloudy brown with amber highlights and just a faint skin of light off-white head. Hot and hoppy in the flavor. Aroma is great, full of brown sugar and molasses. Complex alcohols change as it warms. Nice hoppy finish, lingers.

I was surprised i havenít rated this. I aged a bottle for approximately 8 years; nip size with a crown cap. Malt and caramel aroma. No carbonation left, and I doubt there was much to begin with. Hops are still there surprisingly. Dry palate and earthy plant matter as well. Muddy brown color.

Bottle. A- Butterscotch pudding, caramel, dark fruits, herbs, floral, slightly sweet. A- Mahogany color, hazy liquid, tan head. T- Butterscotch, malty, dark fruits, spices, slightly sweet. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, buttery herbal finish. O- Overall, this was a decent Barleywine. Had two years of age on it so Iím sure that helped. As is normal with Rogue, it was way overpriced. Certainly not worth $20+ a bottle. Yes, the bottle is cool but also deceiving as the walls are thick and doesnít hold as much as youíd expect. This beer was good but didnít wow me at all.

Delicious barleywine! Pours cloudy copper w/ a thin head & decent lacing. Aroma is kind of sweet yet full of hops. Taste is full of sweet malt & finishes just a tad bitter but highly drinkable. An outstanding barleywine!

A first rate barley wine. 110 ibuís? Thatís crazy. And they are certainly present. Caramel and hop aromas. Some sweet malty flavors.. But mostly booze and hops. This would be awesome aged in a barrel.
