COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rogue’s annual holiday offering, Santa’s Private Reserve, is a variation of the classic Saint Rogue Red, but with double the hops--including Chinook, and Centennial, and a mystery hop called Rudolph by head brewer John "more hops" Maier! This holiday elixir is brewed with two-row Harrington, Klages and Munich malts, along with Hugh Baird 30-37, Carastan 13-17, and Crystal 70-80 malts, plus free range coastal water and proprietary top-fermenting Pacman yeast.

Poured from the bomber into an English pint glass. Dark amber color with a creamy head. Aroma is a well balanced mix of sweet caramel malt and spruce hops. Flavor matches the aroma with a very earthy quality. Medium bodied with a mildly astringent finish. Overall a nice amber, but nothing incredibly unique.

Bottle - cloudy tea color with a small head. Has a bland nasty hop taste. Dry. Just can’t get on board with this one.

Rated based on notes taken 20 Dec 2011 -- Not sure what to think about this beer. The aroma is very promising, but the flavor doesn’t quite match. Disappointing. Might be travel tainted.

A sweet darker beer. Light finish and a slight sweet malt flavor. A little bit bland.

Aroma is citrus hops, lemon grass, straw and light carbonation. Taste is a light sweet maltiness that is followed by a slightly bitter aftertaste. A resinous finish. Appearance is a amber body with a very nice fluffy pearl head that retains well.

A decent amber ale, mostly light sweet malts and some hints of grassy and lightly citrusy hops. Nothing special, but not bad either.

A nice winter beer. Pours a cloudy orange. Smells great, hops balanced well with caramel. Taste is fruity and hoppy, but the hops are an interesting variety. A bit of a salty finish. Tasted at the BevMo Holiday Beer Fest.

Bottle. Dark hazy copper with a thick frothy beige head. Aroma is caramel, Apple and toast. Taste follows and adds some bitter leafy hops. Medium greasy mouthfeel with moderate carb. A little weird.

"tastes like a cross between an ipa and a strong ale to me. i’ve had it on it’s own and as part of winter beer tastings and haven’t had one i liked yet. a little too harsh and plain...not what i want in a winter seasonal, and i usually like Rogue."

Considering how unbalanced I thought the St. Rogue Red was, Santa’s Reserve seems to contribute a little more malty body even though its bitterness is accentuated.
