Rogue’s annual holiday offering, Santa’s Private Reserve, is a variation of the classic Saint Rogue Red, but with double the hops--including Chinook, and Centennial, and a mystery hop called Rudolph by head brewer John "more hops" Maier! This holiday elixir is brewed with two-row Harrington, Klages and Munich malts, along with Hugh Baird 30-37, Carastan 13-17, and Crystal 70-80 malts, plus free range coastal water and proprietary top-fermenting Pacman yeast.

Pours a clear, very reddish-copper color with a full, foamy, light tan head that holds quite well and leaves some very nice lace. The aroma is hoppy! Piney/gently citrusy and lightly fruity. The body is medium with a fine & median carbonation. The flavor starts softly fruity and lightly nutty. A nicely sweet caramel maltiness comes through before becoming engulfed in resiny hop flavor and bitterness. And yet, the bitterness never really builds on the palate. Extremely well balanced for such a boldly hopped beer! It finishes quite dry with just some residual maltiness and a bold lingering bitterness.

Pours a clear copper color with minimal lace and moderate carbonation. Aroma and taste have a nutty, caramel, and hop hint to them. Very bitter for a red ale.

Pours a clear copper on tap with thin white head that leaves moderate lace. Aroma of earthy hops and slight caramel malts. Taste is more toward the hop, lingering bitterness, decent but nothing exciting.

Seriously Rogue?!? This is your Christmas beer? Man, what a disappointment. There is nothing Christmas about this mediocre amber ale. Seriously, this is a serious miss from a good brewer. Christmas! Brown ale, porter, or stout! 22oz bottle.

Clear copper with decent head. Found the hops over soapy though and overwhelmed the malts. Bit thin. A little toffee in there. I was disappointed as I usually like Rogue's beers. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Courtesy of Jaghana.

Hazy to cloudy amber. Thin to medium beige head with low retention. Fruity and sprucey aroma, with notes of tomato and cut grass. In the tongue it is initially a bit waterish but then surprisingly builds up to a wonderful hoppy finish. Fizzy carbonation on a somehow thin texture. Medium body

Tasting at Plonk. Can a Christmas beer be hoppy? the hops dominate this one. It’s decent as an Amber ale but nothing really christmassy about it.
