COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rogue’s annual holiday offering, Santa’s Private Reserve, is a variation of the classic Saint Rogue Red, but with double the hops--including Chinook, and Centennial, and a mystery hop called Rudolph by head brewer John "more hops" Maier! This holiday elixir is brewed with two-row Harrington, Klages and Munich malts, along with Hugh Baird 30-37, Carastan 13-17, and Crystal 70-80 malts, plus free range coastal water and proprietary top-fermenting Pacman yeast.

Bottle. Pours a dark clear amber with a mediun tan head that leaves decent lacing. Aroma first has a slight toffee that turns to a sharp hops that gives a slight floral mostly citrus scent. Beer has a good malty taste and finishes with a good amount of hops for a winter ale. Decent overall but not what I wanted in a Christmas ale.

Lots of stale hops in this, which certainly makes it better than your average amber. Stale hops is way too much of the focus though. Pours golden amber with good head and lacing. Tap at Black Squirrel.

Poured from bottle into pint glass. Appearance - A nice hazy rusty brown color with a longinsh lasting billowing cream head. Smell - Can smell a nice piney hop aroma, very appropriate for a Christmas brew Taste - It had a decent hop bite, but not what I expected. Expected something with a little more sweetness for the red ale style, but this had little. Mouthfeel - For a "private reserve" would expect something with a little more heartiness, not watery, but possibly could have used a bit more body. Overall - Worth trying, but one I would forgo in the future. If I want something hoppy I would rather have a traditional or black IPA over this.

Bottle at home from the Bottle Stop. poured a murky red amber with a medium to thick pale yellow off white head. Anything with an aroma of chinook and centennial is likely to do it for me. Hints of blackberry jam, some spice, malts. Flavour has some hops and a little bitterness, some spice. It’s ok but didn’t do it for me.

2014/04/10 - Pours a slightly hazy amber colour with a small, fizzy, khaki coloured head that dissipates quickly. Minimal lacing. Aroma is caramel, honey, pine, citrus and mild roast. Taste is caramel, roasted malts, mild citrus, pine and earthy hops. Mouthfeel is medium with moderate carbonation and a long, bitter, earthy finish. Nicely balanced. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
