Commercial Description:
JLS Release #6: Schwarzbier ~ which translates to Black Beer, is a German lager, very dark brown in color with a tan colored head. Coffee aromas mingled with nutty malt and a touch of caramel grace the nose. The palette is rich, smooth and clean, very malty with roasted notes apparent. The finish is lingering with a touch of residual sweetness and very mildly bitter. Specifications: O.G. 12.2 degrees plato, T.G. 2.2 degrees plato, IBU = 25, ABV ~ 5.2%. Schawrtzbeir is brewed with Palt Malt, Crystal 60, Munich, Carafoam special; German tradition & Oregon grown Sterling hops. Lagered for 6 weeks after it is attenuated with Czech Pilsner yeast. This beer is unfiltered ~ Prost!

Sampled on draft at Smokin’ Joes in Pittsburgh PA this beer poured a black color with a medium sized dark brown head. The aroma was dry, bitter and roasty with notes of coffee and floral hops. The flavor was dryish, roasty, toasty and a touch malty with notes of chocolate, coffee and strong floral hops. The finish was long, roasty and hoppy. Medium body. Solid.

Black with a thick mocha head that leaves plenty of lacing. Unfortunately, rest did not quite live up to the appearance. Aromas of smokiness, gouda, and a slight chocolate. The smokiness was even more apparent in the taste and overwhelmed the other flavors. Thin mouthfeel. Can’t help wondering if this batch was a little off, as think that the gouda/lactic I smelled could be an indication.

JLS: called Black Lager at DRE. Pours deep blackish and turbid with brown head. Nose is dark malt, rich chocolate, nuts. Tastes thick, rich, smooth, creamy, with dark malt, dark choc, backup hops, and slight nuts, molasses, and rauch. Very complex, very well balanced, and very damned good! I’ll be growlering this tomorrow for the holiday.

Pint – Eastside Club Tavern - Olympia, WA
Aroma: Huge smoke and coffee aroma.
Appearance: Dark black in color, clear (If you can see through Black), with a thin head.
Flavor: This was a big black dark malt beer with smoke and coffee undertones.
Palate: Dry coffee finish, with a Good Mouthfeel.
Overall: What a great beer. I might need to go back to try one more of these. The smokey and coffee where so thick. Wow .

Draught @ Cock & Bull as Paul’s Black Lager. Pitch black with great head and lacing. Robust aroma has lots of coffee and a nice acidity. Thick mouthfeel. Loads of coffee and lingering roasty taste. A bit heavy and thick and slightly burnt but a fine, meaty, robust black lager.
