Pours a black with a medium khaki head that left moderate lacing around the glass. The aroma was most coffee and dark roasted malts and bitter chocolate. The taste is very similar but with a little bit of a bitterness to it.

Bottle from Katsuragawa Aeon. Deep black, small tan head that lasts. Huge malty chocolate aroma, just enough smoke. Incredibly smooth, but not too heavy and rich. First oatmeal stout I’ve had, well impressed.

What a piece of work is this ale. How black in color, how complex in maltiness. In flavor and mouthfeel, how rich and smooth. In hoppiness how like an IPA, in balance how like a stout. A beauty of the style. The paragon of dark brews. And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of grain? Thus concludes today’s bastardization of Shakespeare’s Hamlet for the sake of beer. Tune in next week for more Shakesbeerian readings.

22oz bottle in pint glass. Pitch black (no light passed) with 2 fingers light brown foam (medium persistence). Aroma is hoppy with notes of coffee, roasted malts, Chocolate. Pretty light. The bitter comes on early. Taste is more IPA than oatmeal, which is what I prefer to avoid in a stout. However, the Oatmeal starts to shine more after the first glass. Hoppiness sets this apart. Good beer in its own right. Score: A ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

355ml bottle at home, forget where from. Pours black, 1cm tan head that is hanging around really well, looks lovely. Aromas are coffee and oatmeal, burnt toast, dark chocolate. Taste brings a sweet prune note to the coffee and chocolate, more oats, light lingering roasted bitterness. Enjoyed this.

Pours a dark brown with a dark khaki head. Aromas of chocolate and coffee. With a slight vanilla aroma. Taste of chocolate and slight smokeyness. Medium mouth feel. Overall very nice beer especially for the price.

On tap, Luppolo12, Rome. Black, small beige head. Aroma caramel, malt. Relatively lighter body for a stout. Taste coffee, chicory. Highly drinkable. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

DATE TASTED: November 5, 2014... GLASSWARE: Guinness pint... OCCASION: Teacher Convention weekend begins... APPEARANCE: jet black body; thick, creamy head; thick brown coating as the glass drains; a tragedy, as the glass drains... AROMA: intriguing grainy notes with a lactic quality framing them; some chocolate and bread round out the profile... PALATE: creamy yet strong in its backbone; smooth, medium-bodied and drinkable....TASTE: intense, sweet, milky flavor that also presents some briny qualities; secondary hints of chocolate and some smoke make for a complex finish... OVERALL: a completely wonderful drinking experience--hearty, hardy and warming with an excellent edge...worth the price, though? not far off...

Keg at Rogue, PDX, 12/11/14. Last beer in OR on this trip! Dark mahogany brown with a decent light tan covering that retains well. Nose is roast malt, toffee, light cocoa, grain, vanilla. Taste comprises chocolate, light roast, light metallic notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, light roast in a semi drying close with hoppy backnotes. Ok stout but really struggling to see why this beer carries a score of 3.86 !!!
