3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Expected much more. Best part was the appearance which was dark with brown sugar head which lasted only a minute. Aroma was mostly cocoa chocolate with very little coffee at the end. Taste was grainy with mild chocolate and a hint of coffee on the finish. Not much going on. Mouthfeel was dry and thin for a stout. So many better stouts.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500ml. Pours a nice dark black with a three inch dark tan head that lasts. Taste is of roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, smoke, oat, coffee, some fruit and some hops. Similar malt forward aroma. Has a solid body with a dry and bitter finish. Very easy to drink, enjoyable and a solid beer all around. A beer well worth having again, especially at its price point ($6 in my area).

$5.99 for the 650mL bottle purchased from town. To oversized brandy snifter, it pours a turgid syrupy black with a thin, sudsy beige head 1 fingernail in length, Aromas of oatmeal, candied sugar, sugarplums, charcoal, sesame seeds, and booze. Tastes the same with the addition of English yeast, American hops, marsh rosemary, ginger, and dark chocolate by swallow. Thin, smooth, and warming. Canít believe I havenít ever tried this.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
355 ml bottle, labelled as Brown Bear Beer and brewed for Ezo Beer in Sapporo. No label as such, all information printed straight on the bottle. Pours dark brown, close to black. Small brownish head that fades soon. Aroma is very promising - full of malty roastiness, some sweet dark fruits and chocolate. For some reason this aroma feels familiar - and it feels as this should be sweet. Right, this aroma reminds me some barleywines I have had. Taste is not sweet and body a bit lighter than I expected from the aroma. First comes the carbonation together with some sweet fruity notes and coffee. Later hops come to the front and some bitter chocolate and dry roasted malts remain in my mouth for minutes. Quite a treat, this one.

Really nice coffee-chocolate taste. Pours dark with a small head. Really wished, after the fact, I would have had this with the T-bone waiting for me in the fridge!

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
22 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, light coffee, light char, oats, toast, caramel, dark bread, floral, and roasted earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and oat notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, caramel, light char, oats, dark bread, floral, and roasted earthiness. Light earthy/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, caramel, light char, oats, dark bread, floral, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and oat flavors; with great robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very creamy, smooth, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent oatmeal stout! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and oat flavors; and very smooth to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.
