3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Black Brutal on tap at the Drafting Room in Exton, PA. Poured ebony in color with a nice-sized bubbly tan head. Not too strong of an aroma, but you can smell the nice balance of hops and malts. Smooth flavor, but finished kind of flat. Did not really meet my expectations, but it was definitely drinkable.

3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: JUN 12, 2005 On tap at Tylerís. The 4th Johnís private stock though I think what I had was not 9% ABV but it was still called Black Brutal Bitter. Appeared perfectly black but to a light it was crystal clear and reddish hues came through. It had little to no head. Aroma was full of citrusy and piney hops and malt sweetness. Flavor was initially hoppy and caramel sweet, but the finish was biting and sharply bitter. Not the bitter that comes from a lot of hops, the bitter that comes from a beer that has too much black patent malt in it. It lingered for a long time afterwards too. I really couldnít pick out any other malt characteristics because of the overwhelming bitterness. Mouthfeel was medium bodied and decently carbonated. Overall not too impressive considering how good the rest of the Johnís Private stock have been.

Well what can i say about this beer. It pour almost jet black and had a strong aroma of hops. It was refreshing at first with a strong bite aftertaste, toffee and hops. It was called "Black Brutal" for the Rouge 15 aniversery. Very good beer but i couldnít have more than a few at a time....

On tap at richos - pours nice dark amber to blackish color with strong hoppy aroma. It had a near perfect balance of malty flavor to bitter flavors for and IPA

Big beer. Bitter finish. Original take on the schwarzbier. Strong 9% so be careful it will put a hurt on you. Not a session beer though.

John Maier knows what time it is. The color is deceptive - expecting something really malty but immediately taken over by the hop aroma. Different than other schwarzbiers that I have tasted -- but I haven't had many of this style. I recommend grabbing a bottle of this from the brewery and heading to the beach at Newport to enjoy it.

On tap at Happy Gnome, but under the name of Black Brutal Bitter. The beer had a great nose and a very nice dark color. The flavor was good, but not great. Left a bit of an after taste that was not great.
