troopie (444), USA Apr 12, 2008 Draught. Sold as Rogue Black Brutal ck Bitter. Poured black with thin head. Not much lacing. Lingering citrus and toffee nose. Full flavour, Malt, caramel, toffee and coffee. Very Hoppy finish without being overpowering. This is also much stronger than it tastes.
zach8270 (1404), Henrietta, New York, USA Jun 24, 2008 (draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Labeled as Brutal Bitter, but the color and taste definitely don’t match up. Clear black color with a puffy tan head. Aroma is lightly hoppy with a touch of malts. Some dry grass and floral notes as well. Flavor was quite bitter like the regular Brutal Bitter with a good flavor of hops and a roasted malt backbone. Finishes smooth with a bitter and chocolatey finish. I really enjoyed it. TURDFERGUSON (1021), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA Jun 2, 2008 Draught from Tylers. Bartender told me this Brutal Bitter, but when I saw the dark brown color I was thrown. Then I tasted it, definitely not Brutal Bitter. Maybe she meant black Brutal Bitter or maybe I didn’t hear her. I digress...This beer is similar to BB, but this has much more roasted malt and cocoa notes. Alcohol nicely hidden and pretty well balanced overall. No off flavors or any noticeable flaws. Tasty. skoisirius (431), Seattle, Washington, USA May 21, 2008 On tap @ Brouwer’s. Looks a nice thin black. Aroma is hoppy and fairly malted. Couldn’t tell it was 9% whatsoever. Nicely bittered with citrusy and pineapple notes. A bit dry. Goodness! Glouglouburp (1876), Montreal, Quebec, Canada May 15, 2008 In short: A Schwarzbier trying to be a Black-IPA. Excellent.
How: Tap at Brew Kettle (Cleveland)
The look: Dark mahogany body with a medium beige head
In long: Lots of roasted malts with a light biter black chocolate flavour. The beer is very hoppy. Hop profile is somewhere between an American IPA and an English Bitter on steroids. Tasty finish with black chocolate bitterness blending in with the leafy hops bitterness. Body is fluffy, very fluffy (like a spongy black cake or something) with is quite pleasantly unusual for a beer of that kind. Very tasty but never aggressive. Enjoyable in large quantities. Unbelievable, Rogue going nuts on the hops although the style doesn’t call for it. Hops are to Rogue what sugar is to McDonald’s. Damn both of you for my love handles.
oldpainless (34), fort mill, South Carolina, USA May 12, 2008 Big beer. Bitter finish. Original take on the schwarzbier. Strong 9% so be careful it will put a hurt on you. Not a session beer though.
