yngwie (4880), Kristiansand, Norway May 1, 2008 Bottle, 22oz. A hazy golden pour yields a dense, off-white head with long duration. BBQ-smoked nose with a bacon-like note, and malty aroma. Not much hops fighting its way through. Smoked flavor too, but not as smoked as the aroma. There’s also caramel and malt, as well as a little fruityness. Surprisingly thin body, tending towards watery. The finish is rather short and smoked, but some fruity hops and bitterness lasts longer, quite subdued though. Sure not a bad beer, but I would go for other smoked or Rogue beers before this one. (080314) CharlesDarwin (1823), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA Apr 30, 2008 22oz Bottle. An ashy smoke, mostly of hardwood. Salty. Light pork fat. A bit of standard malt. Pretty standard smoke nose. Pours a nice clear amber with golden fringes and a tall two fingers of perforated banana-flesh head. Flavor has a sustained smokiness. There’s a mixing of an amber ale with light toasted smoke. Nice balance, I suppose. Creamy malt, with a bit of hop leaf. Lightly chewy. The smoke is just too subdued. It’s a mid-range malt body, with a few wisps of smoke. Alcohol backs up the profile a little. Fresh, clean, and a little too safe. Normally, I might like a little more of the deeper malt character that runs in this beer in a more robust smokey beer, but it seems to fight with the higher ash. Overall, much too bland for the style. 17thfloor (1403), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 22, 2008 Pours rootbeer like, reddish amber, with many bubbles and a medium sudsy tan head. Nice smoked aroma, malty. Up front sweet smokey malty taste with a definite bitter hop finish. Easy drinking, light bodied and well carbonated. Has that Rogue juciness. Need to go find some BBQ chips. DownsouthGav (602), Greater London, England Apr 17, 2008 bottle at the rake. Sweet nose with smokey bacon aroma. Lovely. Lovely hazy red beer. Taste is mild. caramel hoppy honey some cloying. I really like this beer. Blom (390), Odense, Denmark Apr 17, 2008 Hazy amber with an ok head. Mild smokey and fruity aroma, going into flavours of roasted malts, nuts og flowery saaz hops. The smoke is very balanced (for some boring, I guess), which makes it a nice beer.
tomthompson89 (1459), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 7, 2008 cloudy amber , decent sized foam, nose i didn’t get a ton of smoke on a bit but more hops then smoke, had good smoke malt and hops in the flavor, has with pulled pork and it went very well with it fizl (12), Springfield, Oregon, USA Apr 5, 2008 This is a distinctly hopped smoke ale with an orange-amber hue that permeates a powerful, almost overwhelming smoke aroma and taste. This ale is medium bodied and has dominating hop characteristics if you can get past the smoked salami scent. Has great clarity, Brussels lace, color and head- even out of the bottle, but the fresh hop taste and drinkability are muted by the extreme smoke flavor. Try with steak or pork, but nothing smoked because it has plenty. Trev (850), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA Apr 3, 2008 Bomber from Brewery Creek:
Pours a cloudy amber colour. Light fruity hop aroma, peppery smoke tones.
Smokes comes through in the flavour noticeably but not overpowering the hops completely.
An odd finish reminiscent of salami for me...
