andyhite (290), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Nov 27, 2006 tastes like smokehouse barbeque. i suppose this is rogue’s version of the rauchbier. they do a fine job. it’s more malty than hoppy, but the hops do add a nice spicy flavor to the smokey brew. also, caramel on the initial taste, followed then by burnt esspresso beans. the smoke flavor is best compared to that of a campfire; burnt pine without the sparks flying up in the air. it’s drinkability increases with pizza in front of you. food can really bring out the flavor of this particular beer. the smoke flavor increases once it’s taken in. dry mouthfeel. it’s a meaty beer. it coats the tongue the same way a nice heavy cab sauv would. excellent! Theis (3617), Denmark Nov 23, 2006 Bottle at "American Tasting #2" Clowdy strawyellow - offwhite head. High smokey, Smoked salmon, light malty, Straw, dry. patrick767 (2016), fort wayne, Indiana, USA Nov 22, 2006 bottle - Pours copper with a moderate head. The aroma is malty with lots of smoke. The flavor matches it with very obvious, assertive smokiness. It’s fairly sweet and quite drinkable, but I really think the smokiness is too dominant. Nevertheless, it’s good and definitely worth trying. hiphops (280), caldwell, New Jersey, USA Nov 13, 2006 reddosh copper averge head. smells like smoked sausage. bitter smokiness with some sweetness coming thru. smokey aftertaste. yea it taste like summer sausage. Braudog (3733), Dayton, Ohio, USA Nov 12, 2006 Bottle. Dark reddish color with a nice head. I found this to be an enjoyable amber beer, but didn’t find the smoke character to be as well developed as others (O’Fallon, Alaskan ...). DeuceDeuceOU (51), Athens/Cleveland, Ohio, USA Nov 6, 2006 Smoke is an understatement. It pours a red amber color with a very creamy head. Aroma is blatantly smoked bacon. Taste is very similar, and gets stronger as you finish. Very smooth and palatable with medium lacing. A very hoppy finish with a slight bitterness. Mmm.. Smokey. RollinHard (750), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Oct 25, 2006 Poured a nice looking brownish copper color with a large head, with large bubbles. Lasts pretty long too. Nice smokey aroma here, I love that rauchbier smell. So nice, I wouldn’t mind it in other styles either...Anyway, Beneath that sweetish smokey layer lies a bready caramel malt aroma as well. Not much hops in the nose, more yeast though as it warms. Taste has a wonderful nutty malt quality, very grainy and rye-like, and there’s some smoke in the flavor. This also tastes vaguely yeasty towards the bottom, almost like the Dupont saisons, but not as extreme. Finishes with a tangy hop bitterness that meshes well with all the flavors. Medium to light bodied, slightly gritty feel, perfectly balanced flavors. Smoke is the highlight, but it’s also a team player, and the hop bitterness is something this beer has that others do not. I could see this being even better if it were slightly stronger. Great stuff though. Magjayran (1379), Durham, North Carolina, USA Oct 24, 2006 Thanks to Turdferguson for this one. Dark reddish color with a medium sized off-white head. Malty aroma with hints of sweet apple and a faint note of smoke. The smoke is not faint at all in the flavor. Right there in your face on top of what seems to be a top notch extremely malty ale. I really wish this stuff was readily available in my area. I’d drink it up regularly.
