A nice deep garnet color, lots of wood in the aroma, just enough smoke to not be overpowering, bacon bits and lead pencil are floating around in there too. Very nicely done. highlandlad (1258), Sydney, Australia
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jan 4, 2006 Decent US smoked ale using German smoked malts and Saaz hops. Poured a deep chestnut colour with a thin head. Solid smoked malt aroma, quite soft and a bit peaty, with plenty of smokey bacon character. Soft mouthfeel. Long lingering palate. Nice work. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jan 3, 2006 This ws so weak on the palate that it ruined some interestng aromas and flavors. Aroma like dark salty raosted fruit. Sounds gross but smelled good. Taste was to wtery and weak, bottle may have been flat. MacDaddyOJake (274), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 22, 2005 Poured a cloudy reddish amber color with a medium sized white head with a copper hue. Smoke was very prevalent, more in the aroma than the flavor. The beer tasted smokey at the start followed by a nice malt kick. The end of the flavor was brought out with a hoppy kick. The smoke flavor seemed to get a little old, this was my first smoke beer, but it didn’t really do it for me.I found the Rogue Dead Guy ale to be much better. blankboy (3199), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 16, 2005 Bottle shared with tupalev -- courtesy of tupalev. Pours a clear dark reddish-brown with a big diminishing white head. Nice lacing. Aroma of smoke with enough malt and hops to balance it out. Flavour’s a touch less smoky then the aroma but still quite nice. Starts with the smoke flavour, followed by the malt and ends with a nice hoppy finish. Medium bodied. One of the better Smoked beers I’ve had. tupalev (2611), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 13, 2005 Mislabeled Morimoto Black Soba Ale, bought at the San Francisco Rogue pub with small "smoke" sticker attached to it, shared with Blankboy. Just as we were about to crack open the Smoke, Paul’s fire alarm goes off! Perfect! Dark brown, medium bubbly tan head. Lovely campfire smoke aroma - not artificial at all, really nice. Nice smoke and malt taste - a wonderfully balanced smoked beer. A ton of smoke flavour that really lingers long after you have set down your glass. Almost a smoked turkey quality to it. Medium body. Not much else going on, but really solid for what it is. NachlamSie (1637), Tennessee, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 4, 2005 bottle. Pours a nice rich red hue with a firm white head. Aroma is, well, very smoky with a rich sweet malt foundation which reminded me of their chipotle ale. This is ridiculously smoky tasting, it’s pretty much liquid smoke. There’s a bit of bacon and a sweet maltiness. Wow. surprising, not in a good or bad way, but in a surprising way. zach8270 (2079), Henrietta, New York, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Nov 28, 2005 Updated: Dec 14, 2008[bottle - 22 oz] Hazy orange pour with a nice and long-lasting tan head. Aroma is lots of smoke, meat, salt and a touch of malt. Slightly sweet malt taste at the beginning with lots of smoke and beef underneath. Leaves a slight hint of cigarette smoke in your mouth after. I don’t think I liked smoked beers as a style.
