| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 21, 2009 Appearance: Pours a hazed, mahogany-hued body with a thin, smallish, off-white head.
Smell: Aroma of sweetish, toasty malts layered with smoked wood, chipped beef jerky, a distant fruitiness, and spicy, steely hops.
Taste: Toasted maltiness instilled with smokiness and some slight caramel sweetness. Sure, there’s plenty of smoke to be had in Smoke Ale, but it won’t bowl you over like the Schlenkerla line-up. Faintly fruity. Moderate hop bitterness with some spicy Saaz qualities. Final rise of malt sweetness that drops back down for the dry, smoky, bittersweet finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: It’s enjoyable. A pleasant, well-balanced beer with a nice level of everyday smoke character. KyotoLefty (1392), Kyoto, Japan

Light amber color. Rich caramel and smoke aroma. Pretty good smoked flavor, with decent caramel and bitterness. Ale fruitiness doesn’t seem to really go with the smoke, though. Slightly spicy, like cinnamon, too. Interesting, different, and nice enough.

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 10, 2009 Bottle. Nice delicate smoke aroma and some ripe fruits (apples). Very soft body, not much bitterness. Dry finish probably due to the smoke. Nice classic german rauch flavor and aroma, with clean but appley fermentation profile and small bitterness. billtheman (50), milford, Delaware, USA
