UPDATED: DEC 14, 2008 [bottle - 22 oz] Hazy orange pour with a nice and long-lasting tan head. Aroma is lots of smoke, meat, salt and a touch of malt. Slightly sweet malt taste at the beginning with lots of smoke and beef underneath. Leaves a slight hint of cigarette smoke in your mouth after. I don’t think I liked smoked beers as a style.

bottle - Pours copper with a moderate head. The aroma is malty with lots of smoke. The flavor matches it with very obvious, assertive smokiness. It’s fairly sweet and quite drinkable, but I really think the smokiness is too dominant. Nevertheless, it’s good and definitely worth trying.

Bottle, 22oz. Aroma has a weak smoked note, most similar to raw bacon. Color is amber. The flavor is balanced with soft smoke. Slightly woody in taste.

This is killer, I wish I had the right food to go with as it would do so well when paired. A nice deep garnet color, lots of wood in the aroma, just enough smoke to not be overpowering, bacon bits and lead pencil are floating around in there too. Very nicely done.

22 oz bottle. Aroma is curious. There are citrusy orange piney hop tones evenly balanced with smokey bacon aroma. Neither aroma dominates and thus are both battling for supremacy. Copper/amber color that’s moderately hazy with a minute small light yellowish head. Well I must say I am rather pleasantly suprised by this beer. The start has citrus hop flavors which are accented but not overpowered by the hickory smoke in the middle. A creamy caramel texture comes through at the very end after the raosted smke flavor has subsited. Pass the Gouda!! I enjoy this Rauch more than teh Aecht that I had before. This seems to have more balance and beer characteristics. I’m sure this is not classically rauch, but it is enjoyable nonetheless.

Hooray, Rogue can actually make a beer that isn’t hyper-hoppped... In fact, the hops are very mild in this one. Poured a nice clear amber red color with a finger head that dissipated quickly to a thin covering that laced ok, but certainly didn’t "coat" the glass. Flavor was smokey with a semi-sweet base. Mouthfeel was carbonated and moderate to heavy. A complementary meal with this one would be nice. (Second pouring of 25oz bottle revealed heavy sedimentation.)

Amber of color with a nice beige head. An aroma with smoke and notes caramel. A flavor of smoke, notes of fruits and caramel. A well balanced smoked.

On tap at Rogue’s Portland taphouse, sampled 4 August 2004. Copper orange-red body, thin light cream/off-white head. Smoked malt flavor (duh) and grain (toast) but that damned house yeast still dominates the flavor profile! Medium-bodied. Nice twist but Pacman rules all.
