April 2007 - Nice amber color with smallish head and no lacing. Strong aroma of sweet smoke. Nice flavor of smoked bacon with a little sweet brown sugar. Nice level of smoke and sweetness without being overdone. Odd to say being a Rogue beer, but just a touch more hoppiness would have been nice.

Bottle. Cloudy, dark brown color with a medium-sized fluffy foam. Naturally, the beer smelled smoke, especially wood and smoked ham. The flavor was slightly sweet, smoky. The smokiness was fairly mild with hints of smoked ham, bacon and peppers. The feeling of the liquid was quite dry, the body was medium.

From a 22 oz. distinctive Rogue brown bomber bottle with a blurb and info about the ale on side of the bottle. Made a good appearance, poured as stated, an orange hued amber with a nice sized, foamy pale tan head that slowly reduced to a sticky thin lacing. Had a good smoky aroma, to my nose, a smoky troutiness and a subtle charcoalness. Good carbonation and a smoky, textured, smooth medium bodied mouth feel, good drinkability. Very tasty, a big velvety meaty smokiness, hints of a sweet caramel maltiness, a buried, dry Pacman yeastiness, a smoked woodiness, traces of a peppery hoppiness and a dry, smoky finish with a lingering sweet, smoky alcohol presence in the palate, delicious.

On tap @ SF Brewery, poured deep brown with a two finger tan head. Nose is a bit sweet and subtle. Flavor is the same, with a smooth smokiness and a sweet, clean finish.

Dull orange in colour with a small off white head. Faint smoke aroma, along with notes of sweet malt. The dominant flavor is obviously the smoke, but it’s a bit more mellow than other smoked beers that I’ve tried. The malty munich flavor that I tend to associate with Rogue beers isn’t quite as dominant either. This beer gains points for being balanced, but I would have liked a bit more "umph".

Smokey and floral aroma, reddish gold color, tastes like someone left a bottle of root beer by the burning leaves, zero hop taste, okay for the beginner but doesn’t compare to the German versions

Sampled at Brew Ha Ha 2004. Cloudy brown with a huge off-white head. Smoked malt (duh) and peat aroma is striking. Slight sweetness detected before the smokiness overpowers the flavor. Tough on the palate, though, as the smokiness can quicky become overbearing. A difficult style for me to rate.

At the Brickskellar. Pours a clear copper with an off-white head. Aroma is of smoky BBQ, quite nice. Taste has notes of smoked meats, caramel and dark sugar. Pretty sweet. Medium body which gets watery on the back end. I wish this brew had more thick malty body and a last second punch of smokiness but it never comes back... Overall, solid.
