Cloudy, amber orange appearance. Smoky, leathery aroma, though not as intense as some of the well known Germans. Medium-bodied with an earthy, nicely hopped, slightly nutty taste. Pleasant, dry, lingering finish.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DanielBrown (2586) - Birmingham (via Leicester), West Midlands, ENGLAND - JUN 15, 2005
Bottle from a Sainsburys, Birmingham. Burnished red, with no real head. Gently smoky aroma, with a detectable hop. A flat burst of smoke to start - pleasant, bright, with some cheese and malt. Fades into a slightly tingly, brittle smoke signature - faintly flowery like Chinese tea. Nice - not too powerful. Good balance, just a little teeny bit short on length.

Clear orange-amber body topped by a decent sized light tan frothy head. The aroma is a big wallop of smoked meat. The smoke really dominates the aroma. The flavor is more balanced, there is still lots of smoke, but also some sweet malt and just a bit of hops. The body is medium and a bit fizzy. This should pair wonderfully with the Virgina Kobe Beef Tenderloin I am about to put on the grill.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 warrior (213) - Mt. Wolf, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 4, 2004
Med copper color with a light tan head that was very full. Med smoke aroma with hops mixed in. Good smoke flavor with some bitterness from the hops. There is some sweet malt flavor in the middle with a dry slight bitter finish. Pass me the deer jerky too go with this beer! A good overall beer.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Beaver (874) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - MAY 25, 2004
The Rogue Smoke Ale pours a hazy, copper red with a decent sized, fizzy white head that lasted pretty well.
The aroma is strong smoke, like smoked summer sausage or bacon and mesquite.
The taste is some malty, almost candy-like, sweetness with strong smoke followed by a nice hoppy finish. Pretty well balanced, but the candy sweetness was a bit much at times. The palate was a little on the thin side.
Overall, a very nice smoked beer. The more of these I have, the more I like them!
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 axilla (962) - New Providence, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 31, 2004
Definate smoked nose with citrusy hops also very present. Thick looking red/orange body with a small thick white head. Smoky malts flavor that gets bitter and dries out in the finish. Very smooth.

Mislabeled Morimoto Black Soba Ale, bought at the San Francisco Rogue pub with small "smoke" sticker attached to it, shared with Blankboy. Just as we were about to crack open the Smoke, Paul’s fire alarm goes off! Perfect! Dark brown, medium bubbly tan head. Lovely campfire smoke aroma - not artificial at all, really nice. Nice smoke and malt taste - a wonderfully balanced smoked beer. A ton of smoke flavour that really lingers long after you have set down your glass. Almost a smoked turkey quality to it. Medium body. Not much else going on, but really solid for what it is.
