Bottle at home with renffisch, 25th June 2008. Cloudy amber with a smoky nose that also has a lactic character. Tastes like a watered down Bamberg rauchbier, with plum flavours too. Average weight. An enjoyable smoked ale, but no Schlenkerla!

tastes like smokehouse barbeque. i suppose this is rogue’s version of the rauchbier. they do a fine job. it’s more malty than hoppy, but the hops do add a nice spicy flavor to the smokey brew. also, caramel on the initial taste, followed then by burnt esspresso beans. the smoke flavor is best compared to that of a campfire; burnt pine without the sparks flying up in the air. it’s drinkability increases with pizza in front of you. food can really bring out the flavor of this particular beer. the smoke flavor increases once it’s taken in. dry mouthfeel. it’s a meaty beer. it coats the tongue the same way a nice heavy cab sauv would. excellent!

Pours a dull orange with a short-lived head. Fresh lightly smoky flavour, jerky, teryaki. Taste is somewhat muted - fairly basic amber ale with just a hint of sweet smoke, like glazed smoked salmon or teryaki beef. Nice subtle smoked finish, nothing offensive here. Body is thin but quite carbonated - no complaints. This is a beer that really needs to be enjoyed withfood. It really makes me hungry. It’s a lot more subtle than many smoked ales I’ve had, and sweeter, which I like. Call me picky, but I the fact that it makes me crave salty meat detracts from the enjoyment of the beverage on its own. Not bad, though.

Bomber. The pour yields a moderately hazy, dark amber colored body. A small, foamy, off-white head leaves virtually no lacing behind. The nose is based in caramel and biscuit malt, lightly sweet, with a smoky, savory, alderwood overtone. Flavors are very much the same, lightly toasty and stocked with caramel malt, with a stout smoked element and notes of earthen hops. Medium bodied and balanced, the palate neither disappoints or impresses. Overall, it’s a sound rauchbier that I wold certainly never turn down, but the sweetness is a little overbearing.

22 oz bottle pours a brown color with a big tan head. Alot of smoke in the aroma. Reminds me of when you put a campfire out, the aroma you get. Slightly sweet. with a big smoke body. A bit too thin in the body. Not bad. Would be good with a roast or bbq.

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2009 Draught at McGlaughlin’s in Kyoto. Light amber color. Rich caramel and smoke aroma. Pretty good smoked flavor, with decent caramel and bitterness. Ale fruitiness doesn’t seem to really go with the smoke, though. Slightly spicy, like cinnamon, too. Interesting, different, and nice enough.

Dark, clear, orange-brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of smoked pork and malt. It tastes like a hop-deficient amber ale and smoke. Medium bodied, low carbonation. Ok.
