It has a great hops aroma with lots of grapefruit. The flavor is also highly hopped. I mean it’s really, really hoppy. I was thinking double IPA level though my fellow tasters argued that the hops profile is different and I eventually agreed. There’s some citrus and pine notes in the flavor. There’s some caramel malt in there somewhere, but the hops really overwhelms everything else. It lacks balance. Perhaps as a result, it seems like even more than the stated 60 IBUs. It’s still pretty good, but for the price... ouch. Angeloregon (2038), Portland, Oregon, USA

Hints of bubble gum and caramel with a potent but not overbearing alcohol presence. Would be even more satisfying if this beer was not grossly overpriced. bitbucket (2036), Kirkland, Washington, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 1, 2007 Ceramic swingtop courtesy after4ever. The American Strong Ale designation seems arbitrary. They could have just as easily called it a DIPA. Maybe it’s an imperial APA? Whatever. Pours a hazy orange with a fluffy off-white head. Aroma of herbal hops, citrus, fruit. Full sweet body and moderate carbonation. Caramel, nuts, bread and fruit leading to a grapefruit finish. sliffy (2012), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 5, 2007 Big expensive bottle: Hazy copper colored pour with a medium white head. Aroma, piny, some spice, caramel, a hint of citrus, and some brown sugar. Flavor, perfumey, spicy hops, some sweet malts, and some pine on the finish. I was surprised it was only 60 IBU’s, it tasted more bitter than that. I liked it, but I ain’t paying $18 for a bottle of this ever again. decaturstevo (2010), decatur, Tennessee, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 4, 2007 Almost no nose on this beer for me. A sightly hazed orange pour. A hop bitter that is far above the nose. A bit thin but carbonation is good. All around good beer that is very refreshing a hops slam that is the way it should be. thanks to whoever brought this to the Cinncy gathering. Terminus (1955), Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 24, 2007 bottle-thanks to vyvvy for spending the awful price for this one and for sharing. pours copper with a dense rocky off-white head. nose is carmel malt, green hops, light mustyness and vanilla. carmel and crusty malts subdue the resinous hops here-lots of pine and minty notes. really not the most pleasant of bitterness here. become tiresome over time, but i gave it a decent score for being what it was. Rogue could have done much better with this. 10%? I didn’t taste it, but i definatley FELT it. Man, was i drunk after this one and the Free State C3 IPA. scraff (1955), Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Soft nose of candied grapefruit and honey, with lighter tones of spruce and toasty sweet malt. Hoppy florals and citrus flavors throughout, but with only medium bitterness factor. Light caramel malt keeps it all in check. Shocking for Rogue actually. Booze shines a bit here too. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry finish. Nothing spectactular here...just ok... | 1.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 5/20 | Sep 30, 2007 Orange with a wispy white head. Smells musty and sweaty, not much hops in the nose. Flavor wise, though, it’s astoundingly bitter, and not in a "hoppy IPA" sort of way; rather than citrus or pine or anything hop-flavored, it’s just plain bitter. Kind of sugary, but it’s basically drinking unrefined hop juice.
